I got my first draw for zone D3-5 .
Ok, so I whimped out and it's an over the counter, real low success rate hunt but I know a secret spot on private land where I can go and" NOT" see a deer without any competition from other hunters. Actually it's a timber company's land and I've seen a lot of deer and a bear that's a one day hunt away. It's posted to high heaven but if you call you can hunt as long as you don't cut their timber. It was a nice brown phase, black bear. Murphys Law decrees I'll never see that bear or the deer during open season but at least I can dream  and hunt!
I wish all of you good luck on your draws and big bucks, boars and bulls to bring home.
Good Hunting

Consider yourself lucky Greg! I don't have the luxury of hunting private land. I have to try my luck every season with a bunch other hunter. Some I despised so much. I don't how long before I quit hunting California forever.

Here's the opening day last year. Preparing for an 8 mile trek. It makes African Hunt looks like a picnic.

Quick lunch on the go

Arrived at the camp 3 hours later before noon just in time to get out of the August sun. Looks like the parking lot was already full.

Real estate is at a premium here. No room for my tent.

Well it's all worth it when you see animal like these, prior to opening day.

Greg,

Best of luck to you. It is true that day hunting is better than a day at the office.

DF,

What a zoo. It would indeed be enough to make a fellow give up hunting and take up another sport.

well I am anxiously awaiting the draw results hoping for x12 its the first time we have tried for this zone as we usually go after x5a but dad drew it last year and it is a far cry from what I remember as a kid. I got 4 points he had 0 so we should be in the mix with an average of 2 points.

As for having a place ot hunt most all of the spi land is open to hunters you just cant drive through it. My party has a very old agreement from the 50s or 60s that was set up as a hunting club or something and has been grandfathered in so we can access a lot more of it.

Good luck to all

We hunted X-12 last year. Up by the Sonora pass above the Marine mountain training center. I've been hunting the area across the highway by Lobdell lake and Birchum creek but in 3 days of scouting I saw no animals. I have hunted that area on and off since about 1962. It's pretty weather relient. I hope you do well there. It's a real nice area to hunt because of the different elevations and terrain available. I went back late season one year for the last weekend and there were deer all over the place because it had snowed.
Good Hunting

That looks like a great area and your hunting vehicles will get you a long way in. Great Idea!
Let me know how you do and thanks for the pictures.

DF,

I don't blame you, that parking is nuts!
Here is my parking spot where I deer hunt. I have about a 1/2 mile walk from here.

Greg,
That's in A-Zone. I probably won't get A zone deer tag for the first time this year. I'm still gonna hunt bear though. A co-worker invited me to hunt D-9 so that's the deer tag I will be getting. I'm also getting D-11 for my second tag. We'll see.

JD, Grrrrrrrrrrrrr! Man I'm cold just looking at that picture. We hunt here in Kalifornistan at the peak of summer where the temperatures can sometimes reach triple digit.

Hey that truck looks familiar. Is that a Duramax?

It does get a bit nippy at times. That afternoon a big storm came in and dumped a foot of snow.

Yup, same truck. I have a 6.0L in mine. Heated seats are nice after a long day in the woods too.

My buddy just drew a California Big Horn Sheep tag!!!! Crazy....and I get to go with him to help out.

Colin,

That is awesome! Are you going to video the hunt?

JD338

Colin,

That rocks! Tags must be very scarce. We're pulling for you and your buddy. Trust that he connects.

Most likely I will video it. I'm just going to do what he asks of me. Cook, clean, spot, gut, whatever. He is one of only 4 hunters that got drawn for the area. Should be a great experience.
