You only need one square cut, the one on leading end-edge of the "ring". Its why before cutting you square the neck using your trimmer and deburr as usual. After cutting what remains of the neck is trimmed a bit more but only to add a bit more clearance so the ring doesn't bottom out.
The advantage of that method? In the case of a tight neck chamber, or any chamber for that matter, it matches the neck OD of the brass you're using. For example, my 250Imp has a .283" chamber, the brass turned to .281" for .002" clearance with a bullet seated. In that instance the gauges sold by Sinclair wouldn't work.
