What is the difference between cast bullets and copper bullets and why use cast bullets if the lead fouls your rifling?

Does cast bullets need lube to seat and why the gas checks on them?

You’ll probably get better answers from others than from me, but here goes.

If you get lead fouling from cast bullets, you’re doin it wrong.

With more modern cartridges, of high velocity, copper jacketed bullets can be pushed down the barrel at higher velocities than cast bullets could, without being damaged. That’s why jacketed bullets were invented in the first place.

The lube on cast bullets helps to prevent leading.

The gas checks help to keep the cast bullets from being deformed, and can allow them to be pushed faster.

Cast bullets are cheaper than jacketed bullets, and easier to make yourself than jacketed bullets.

Cast bullets won’t wear your barrel out.

Cast bullets go faster at the same pressure than a comparable jacketed bullet, due to less friction.

Cast bullets are great for reduced loads, and for loading cartridges that were originally designed for cast bullets.

Cast bullets of the correct design, and hardness, perform/penetrate better than jacketed bullets, at the same velocity. That’s why they are preferred for a revolver you would use for bear protection, hunting, etc.

Cast bullets aren’t for 3000 fps, but they have their place, and some advantages.
