Christmas/New Years Elk hunt

Thought I'd post a brief update on Gerry and Maria. They are working hard to tag those elk, but the cows are co-operating. They had four bulls come in early yesterday morning. They talked to the bulls for quite a while, but the big brutes finally left. The cows never came in. They have been out each day, hunting the entire day. Maria is getting an advanced course in elk hunting, learning from a great hunter. Unfortunately, the cows are coming in late, after dark. Gerry is finding the fresh tracks each morning, but no cows during light. Today may be the day. I'm unable to be with them, though I'd love to be out there today.

Yes taking a Elk on January 1st is the right way to any New Year. Good luck to both gerry & Maria!
Thanks DrMike for your update.

Blessings,
Dan

Could be a hard hunt for them. We are experiencing unseasonably warm weather yesterday and today (+2 C/35 F) with a prediction of snowfall warnings. They are at a slightly higher elevation, so they could get a lot of snow.

Gerry and Maria watched nine bulls today. Two were massive critters, Gerry said--a 6X6 and a royal (7X7). Isn't that the way it goes? Don't have a tag for bulls, and bulls show up. It snowed rather heavily all day, and they were cold and wet when they got home. Tomorrow is their last day. This is it!

Good luck to them tomorrow, sometimes that last day is the trick, keeping my fingers crossed that they get at least one.

Good luck to them. Some think that hunting cows is easy, not always.

True words! Savvy old cow elk might well be the lead animal in the herd and do everything she can to keep out of sight of hunters or other predators.

Wishing the best of luck to Gerry and Maria. Hopefully, the last day will be the best day for them and they fill their tags.

I'll guarantee that they have worked hard. The animals have not co-operated. We are "enjoying" a blizzard right now and it is full moon. About everything is suddenly conspiring against them. Still, they are going to be hard at it again today.

It does make for a true challenge. I do want Gerry and Maria to connect. What's frustrating is that they are seeing so many bulls, and some that are quite large. However, the cows are slipping in under cover of full darkness.

Elk hunting, no matter which gender is tough in the wild... That is what keeps us coming back year after year!

I agree Scotty. In my hunting experience Elk are by far the smartest animal. They just don't make many mistakes.
The blizzard sure won't help their cause . Wishing nothing but good luck to both gerry & Maria .
Thanks for the updates.

Blessings,
Dan

Great morning, but the elk didn't slip in (consequently, they didn't slip up, either). Three elk had been near where we set up, but came through during the hours of darkness, so no shot. Gerry and Maria are going back out again this evening. Snow is about eighteen inches deep and still falling. Yeah, it was brisk.

Back home from the elk hunting trip and the short story is no elk for us this time. I'll post up some pictures in the next couple of days and fill in some details. DrMike will likely laugh at this, about 1 1/2 hrs west of where he lives I happened to look down on the river and of course there were 3 cows and 2 calves walking around in broad daylight  they looked to be in fine shape........

We did have a good time, saw lots of animals and very nice country. Met some great people too.

Speaking of Mike, he had his wife Lynda were very gracious to host us and were very kind to us. He even lent us an elk call and let us use a pair of high quality range finding binoculars. He scouted some areas for us that certainly had good numbers of elk in them. So thank you very much from Maria and I and we hope to see you in the summer here for some salmon fishing.

Good to see that you made it safely. Of course, I am not in the least surprised that you saw cows along the Pine. That is as it should be. We're glad you came. My sole regret is that you didn't tag out while here.

I'm sorry you and Maria didn't fill your tags but I'm happy you had friendship and fun in God's beautiful creation.

Sorry for you guys, maybe next year. But I long ago consoled myself with a much used phrase: "That's why its called hunting and not shooting". Again good luck next year!!!!
