I've recently become intrigued by the Shuff's Parkerizing Mini Garand to use as a truck and guide gun. I know that chopping a barrel down to 16 inches will cause a loss in velocity, but I want to test my loads to make sure I'm still getting optimum performance out of the .30-06. What I'm looking for is a relatively inexpensive and portable chronograph to test out my loads on.

I use the Shooting Chrony Beta Master which comes with the remote display screen. I have had this chrony for a couple of years now and do not use it all of the time but it sure comes in handy for load development in old or new calibers.

Mine is quite reapeatable and compares will in velocity readings to others that I have tested it against. It will store and recover up to 5 strings of 50 shots. Stored data is easily loaded unto the screen of the remote display. These are on sale now at a couple places and are just over $100.

The Shooting Chrony Alpha will serve your needs, and it is likely the least expensive model of chronograph you will find. I've not used either the RCBS Ammomaster Chronograph or the PACT Chronograph, but I would imagine either of them will meet your requirements.

I use the shooting chrony beta . mine is not the master . the master has the remote readout . if I were to buy again I would spend the few extra dollars , $20 I think , and get the master . Jim

I use the Shooting Chrony Beta Master. Works well. Lighting seems to hamper it in the dead of Summer with alot of sun light, but other more normal times, it works fine. Scotty

I use the ProChrono Plus and it's served me well. It is nothing fancy but it seems to work fine and they aren't overly expensive. I believe I just saw one in the store for $119.00 or something like that. For what it's worth, they are made in the USA as well.
