Another clam day today. The weather was more of a challenge but we were able to get our limit in a timely manner. This is a fun dig in the middle of the week so only hundreds of cars are on the beach, rather than thousands. The spring and early fall digs, draw thousands of people and cars. The Chamber of Commerce says that a good weather, daylight weekend dig, brings millions of dollars into our local economy. Our beach is about 25 miles long and is one of the most productive clamming beaches in western Washington. We were checked by a game guy today, and we had the opportunity to talk about the increase in the number of seasons and the future for clams. He said the population is very healthy and the target goal for harvest this winter season was 4 million clams. A goal of which he said, that we might not achieve. Our clams are currently 1.5 years old and average slightly over 4 inches long. He said by spring the harvest size will increase at least an inch and a half. We have one more daylight dig tomorrow and weather permitting will go again. We have another series of digs planned for the first of the year. My elk hunting is suffering but these clams are calling to me at night.

I suppose anon resident needs a non resident fishing license to partake in the festivities?

That always sounds like a pleasant and productive employment of the day, Bill. I would love to be on the coast again to harvest a few clams.

Vince a non-resident clam license is the best value Washington has for non residents. A three day license costs $8.60. Its a bargain with a good tide and lots of clams.

..."clam hunting", had to chuckle, remembering digging clams on the beach @ Yakutat packing a .375, more for local bruins, but you never know when you might run into a recalcitrant clam...

 :p

Very cool.. It is on the list of things to do while in the Northwest...

Clams and eggs are a meal I have been dreaming about since the last time Katie made them!

I'd say between clams and elk you've had a great year and there is a whole lot less packing involved too!
