What was this gun made for?
Is it a 1911 for conceal carry?
What are common problems and fixes?
Did they all come with fixed front sight?
What replacement sights go well with this gun?

What gunsmithing would you do to a stock gun?

Why is it called government when it is not a full size government model?

The Colt Government 380 was intended as a General's sidearm. Being configured as a smaller version of the 1911 being the issue sidearm at the time. It was purely for self-defense, but reality moslty ceremonial.

I wouldn't think a general would be caught with a small caliber like that.

General grade officers are not, by normal standards, subjected to the risk of combat like a LtColonel or below, therefore they really have no need to be armed.

And very few General's have been caught dead.... they tend to survive.

Anyway..... that was the purpose fo the Colt Government 380. Even Georgie Patton carried one when not adorned in his Colts SAA's.

Thanks for the history is it in a colt book somewhere? I'd like to read about some other colts I have?

I have no idea what books may contain the information..... my knowledge came from eating at the Marine Corps feed trough for 23 years.
