Coyote bullets

I had a few minutes today to do something I have wanted to for a long time: recover some coyote bullets. I took 3 of my favorite coyote bullets and shot them into water jugs to see the response. For coyotes I am not a fan of the hyper-explosive bullets. The jugs were positioned at 50 yards. Velocities are at the muzzle.

.204 Hornady 45grain sp @ 3200fps recovered in 2nd jug (dimpled the back of it)- recovered weight =19 grains
.224 Sierra 63grain semi-point @3350 recovered 3rd jug (dimpled back)- recovered weight =31 grains
Barnes 50 grain x @3650 - recovered weight= 49.5 grains

45 sp from the 204:

50 grain X and 63 grain semi-point rom the 22-250: the last pic shows that even the little 22 cal bullets turn into the distinctive "X".

I'm betting the 45 grain Hornady was from the .204 Ruger. Never tried anything over 40 grains from mine.

The others must be from your .22-250 rifle. Nice. That Barnes sure held together well. They tend to do that.

Have you tried the 35 gr Berger HP from the .204, on coyotes?

For some reason, I seem to do most of my coyote shooting with the .25-06, either 100's or 115's. Don't really care how the hides come out most of the time. Good thing, shooting them with that rifle.

Yes, good thing you're unconcerned with hides if using the 25-06. If I wanted to save hides using a 25-06 I would use a game bullet.
I have used Berger 35 & 40 grains and prefer the 40 grain as it shoots as well and loads easier for me and I haven't been able to tell any on-game difference. Some guys I know though have a definite preference for the 35. They claim less exits. Me, I don't see a difference but I will take an exit over an explosion.

Neat test. I took a dozen or so yotes with my 204 and the 45gr bullet last year. It seemed to work much better than the more explosive ones. I took one yote through the shoulder and the bullet exited his offside hip, another through the hip and it exited the off side shoulder. Online reviews from people using this bullet in AR's on hogs are good also. If it expands and still exits a 200lb hog it will hammer a yote from most any angle.

Still want someone to come out with a real high BC tough 40gr 204 bullet for the optimum in velocity and wind drift in a tough yote killing bullet that works in standard factory barrels. Mine has a 1 in 10 but most are 1 in 12 if I remember right. Predator hunters who need to be able to anchor a yote and not blow up a cat or fox would line up for a bullet like that.

I have 3 new loads to try on yotes this year. A 221 load using a 45gr spire pt at 3000 fps. A two 223 loads at 3270 fps using the berger 52gr hpv and the A-max 52gr. And yes I just picked up a box of 52gr CC noslers to try out.
