A few weeks ago I posted in the classifieds that I was looking for some 204 brass for my CZ rifle. I also posted on the Predatormasters forum and got a reply from someone who had plenty about 30 minutes from me. I left my phone number and he called me that night and asked me if I was planning to hunt over the weekend. I told him that I hadn't planned on it but I had just enough brass to do some load testing, Saturday, at the range. He invited me to hunt with him all day Sunday and I could get the brass then if I wanted. He told me his name was T.R. and I told him that if I could get to the range Saturday, I would be at his place Sunday morning at 4:30 am ready to go.
So, I get to his place and he has the truck running and we are on our way for about a 2 hour drive to a couple private ranches that he has access to. Going down the road he asks me when I got into coyote hunting and we're telling a few stories. I told him that I started hunting coyotes and predators shortly after getting stationed in Colorado in 2004 and that I have watched quite a few videos on calling and hunting over the years. I mentioned a few names like Randy Anderson, Byron South, and Rick Pallett- one of the "Verminators". TR says to me "Oh, then you must have seen me in a few of those dvds". Come to find out, he grew up with Rick Pallet in Kansas and has been calling coyotes and filming with them here in Colorado since 1986. Wow! I told him I never been hunting with a movie star before and he thought that was pretty funny.
We got to the first ranch right at day light and on the first stand, he called in 3 with his Fox Pro. He took one out and I winged one. By 11:15, we had 5 on the ground. We then moved to a second ranch maybe 10 miles away and hunted the rest of the day making several stands. The second to last stand, 4 coyotes came in and we killed 2. The last stand we made, one coyote came in and was so close to TR, I was saying "he's right in front of you" but it had come in from around the side of the hill within 10 yards of him and he was looking in front but too far. When he saw it he shot it going away and about 2 shots later it was toes up.
All in all we counted up 15 stands, no more than 15 minutes and 17 coyotes came to the call! It was awesome! He told me on the way up that if we didn't kill at least 6, he'd be upset. I was kinda thinking to myself "yeah right"--that was before I realized who it was that had invited me to go along for only his 2nd hunt of the season! I'm still stoked and probably will be for quite some time!!
