Coyotes/Wolves

Washington: coyotes all year, no limit. Wolves, shoot one, go to jail.

Some years I've been pretty hot on killing coyotes, some years they're simply targets of opportunity.

I've shot them with quite a few different rifles, and not really concerned with saving the pelts. My .25-06 is my favorite rifle for the task for two reasons: it puts them down instantly, and it's great practice with my usual mule deer rifle.

The 7mm Rem mag with a 140 gr bullet at 3225 fps is absolutely "enough gun" for coyote.

I shot a coyote with my 7 RM one afternoon. I was shooting 175 grain TBBC bullets at ~2870 fps when I saw a coyote at ~225 yards looking at us. She seemed intrigued at our passage. I drew a bead on this fine animal and pulled the trigger. When I recovered from battery, she had disappeared. I was somewhat mystified. She had been standing in a meadow and the grass was about belly high on her, and I could see nothing. I decided to walk out to where I had last seen her. As I drew near, she was lying on the ground with her head between her paws and appeared to be looking upward at me as I approached. I moved to the side and noted that she was not tracking me with her eyes, so I gingerly touched her eye with my rifle. There was no blink reflex. She was well and truly dead. There was no blood, no massive holes apparent in her pelt. She had been facing me when I pulled the trigger, and I did finally discover a nice .284 hole just above her sternum. What was intriguing was that there was no exit wound. With that particular bullet at that velocity, there should have been a terrible mess. Careful inspection finally cleared up the mystery. The bullet had passed through the body, turning everything inside the body to a thick soup before passing out through the anus. Talk about saving the pelt! I'm still astonished at some of the flukes encountered when shooting. I do wish I had had a camera with me at that time; that would have been a fascinating picture.

What a great story Dr Mike, thanks for sharing it with us.

Well, I never heard from fotis on why he dislikes the Blaser, but I did hear from several who thought it was a good idea and that the young man would be able to hunt the world with the 257 weatherby, the 300 weatherby and the 375 H & H and if he took care of them, they should last a lifetime. Hodgeman and Jamila was kind enough to confirm ammo was available for all three in out of the way places around the world, so this is what I am going to do.

Only Jamila and Hodgeman has commented on the idea of getting the "Professional", but both of them actually said that is exactly what they would get, so unless I hear a negative from someone, that is what I will get.

Although the 257 will be more gun than needed for coyotes, it will for sure have the reach for them.

I once again want to thank you who contributed

Around here I shoot most coyotes while sitting in a deer stand with my 30-06. 150-165gr BTs tear them up pretty good but the coyotes around here aren't worth anything.

I can shoot coyotes all year here too , on private land, if you go North into Crown land there is a season.
I have 2 rifles for coyotes one is a .223 rem in a CZ527 with very nice wood.
The other is a weatherby vanguard in .243 win, which has quickly become one of my favourites. I bought it for a truck gun and everyday throw around rifle. It fits me very good and I shoot it well.
Wolves I have to travel some to target, but in the Northwest of Alberta they are becoming quite a problem. Last estimate is over 7000 wolves in the province. Kill one or two ungalates a week and you can see the problem. There are bounties now in several Northern Counties for them.
I have seen 2 whilebowhunting this past fall , no closing the gap in them.

Coyotes are a target of opportunity here too. I've taken two with a bow whilesitting in a tree stand bow hunting. I have a 22-250 set up for just that purpose and a 12 ha with #4 buckshot.
