Current loads, old shotgun, compatible?

Hi, I have a single shot Savage model 220B chambered for 2 3/4 28 gauge that my grandfather bought back in 1949. On the barrel it shows "Selected Forged Steel".
Would it be safe to use current 2 3/4 loads with it?
The reason I ask is my son wants to use it.
