I picked up a tubegun in 308 a couple of months ago. It is an ellesio RTS with a rem 700 LTR barreled action with a jewel trigger. I had great hopes for it but it has not proven to be as accurate as I had hoped. Factory and reloads alike the best I can get is 3/4-1” groups at 100 yards.

Now I have been planning on fixing it up. I have been looking at a bartlein 1-11.25 twist #14 barrel. My decision now is do I get the remington action I already have trued up and rebarrel or should I go all out and get a custom action. The pierce engineering tube gun action. They where designed to work with the RTS chassis.

So whats the better way to go, drop the cash for a custom action and barrel or safe the money, true up the face of the remington action and install the barrel, and use the money saved to invest in a suppressor.

How much of a difference does a custom action really make?

I own both customs and tons of Remington's and can't tell the difference in accuracy. The barrel is 95+% of the accuracy in a gun anyway. I've chambered over 200 custom barrels for myself in the last 23 years and have seen plenty of good and plenty crappy barrels. The most reasonable way to get things done would be to send the barrel and action to longriflesinc.com. They have a on going group buy on Snipers Hide for action truing (125.00) and barrel install (200.00 for 308). Muzzle threading is 50.00 if you want it done for the suppressor. The do have some more options if your interested. Look here for more info: http://snipershide.scout.com/forums/555 ... -buy?s=541

You can get Bartlein barrels from bugholes.com, grizzly.com, and butchsreloading.com.

Some say trueing the face of the action isn't enough. You must also true the bolt face, the lugs, recut the barrel threads, and I don't know what else, to receive any benefit. To do all this gets expensive and that's where the custom action comes into consideration. I guess it all depends on what you want out of the rifle.
Personally all I would do is true the action face and opt for a quality barrel.

I have a Pierce tube action in my Elisio and it is an honest .1-.2 grouping rifle. I shot a lot cleans in competitions at 600 yards last year with X count in the mid to upper teens (X ring at 600 is 3"). This is with a Bartlein 30" medium palma barrel in 6BRX. That being said; the rifle used for most matches is a trued up Remington action. Do you know what the existing barrel is? If it you want the rifle to shoot .25 MOA or better you need to make sure barrel and action are up to the task. Sounds like both need to be looked at. I would also go with a faster twist (10) if you want to shoot the heavies.

I'd just true up the one you got. It will be a lot cheaper. Mine 280AI is a trued 700 and it will shoot under .1" @ 100 yards unless you got other ideas for the action!

I decided to just go all out and go with the custom action. The pierce engineering tubegun action. I'm going to be sending him a bartlien barrel to install on one of his actions and chamber it for a no turn neck, throated for 155-175gr SMK loaded to 2.85" magazine

I'll get it ceracoated dark gray or matte black.

I don't think you can go wrong with that custom action. The one thing I would do is take the advice on going with a little faster twist in the barrel. I would recommend 1-10 or 1-9.5 in a 24" or 26".
Just my opinion. Good luck..

Because I'll be shooting mainly 155-175gr bullets bartlien suggested the 1-11.25 twist. Said it was optimum and 90% of their match shooters ran that twist. Planning on leaving it 25"

Good idea on the custom action. There weren't many avail 20 years ago when I got the donor rifle which became my "Green Machine." So mine has a trued up Rem 700 action. That's fine for me, but I can see the advantage of starting with a custom action.

On the barrel, I've had both 1:12 and 1:13 twist .308's - using mostly 155 - 175 gr bullets. Those twists handled the various bullet weights very well. Currently am running a 1:12 twist Krieger, 24" long, in the Rem varmint contour. It's proven a good "all-around" barrel. I'm not real interested in running the 200+ grain bullets from a .308, although I see that Montana Marine has done so with excellent results.

I think you're on a good path which should lead to excellent match accuracy!

Keep us posted please!

Bryan Leitz has Pierce build his F-class rifles, You are making a great choice having them put their action on a Bartlein barrel.

Case in point: My 7mm Express (280) was an exceptional shooter with 145-154s, but "iffy" on anything heavier or faster (2900fps) had it blueprinted; turns out the receiver end and the bolt face were "very" uneven! I've heard for years that "Remington's don't need Blueprinting"...well, if you're just killing deer with a certain bullet weight or load...yes. However, I've found that Blueprinted actions/barrels are more consistent across the board on both weights and velocities. Anyone else discovered this? For the Record, for Myself, I am a Believer in Blueprinted actions/barrels!

Got my barreled action back from pierce engineering, Put it together today and torqued everything down. Just need to add a few more gadgets and bipod and it will be ready for finish ceracoat.
