Custom barrel

Hi guys,
thanks for all the responses. My gun is a Weatherby stainless synthetic mark V .270 win. I bought the gun used at a great price. guy said it wouldn't shoot and a week of wipeout fixed that issue. the best I got it to shoot was 1 inch at 100 yards and did it with 130's and 150's bullets. The last couple of years the pattern has opened up to 2 to 3 inches. I usually wait about 8 mins between firing and never shot it about 60 degrees out. I have tried lots of stuff re clean barrel, swap out scopes. floated the barrel, I even tried shooting it the other day and had a couple of real flyers and I am shooting it off a lead sled. I have always wanted a project gun to play with. I love shooting this gun and have ran thousands of rounds out of it over the years. i was thinking of getting a 26 or 27 inch barrel and just keeping it at a .270 win and just having that one gun you can just keep shooting every time at the range. I really don't have many gaps and would like to have my first custom barrel to put on.

LT, you are shooting a .270 Winchester, Mark V? Just curious but is still should shoot under MOA. Every .270 that I have owned in 50+ years has shot better than MOA. Something else must be wrong, just thinking?

LT,
Before you write her off, try shooting it off of a backpack or soft rest. I've seen some rifles effected by the stiff/hard forward bag of the lead sled. Even when shooting my heavy match gun, I influence the shot by shooting the Harris bipod off of a concrete rest or in the dirt. Might be worth a shot. I'm right there with you in your love of the .270 Win. and so was the Dean of gunwriters JOC. For recoil, flat trajectory and killing power it's a tough combo to beat!
Good Luck,
Joe

EOD,
that's a good idea. I will be at the range this Saturday and will try shooting off sandbags or better yet I can mount one of my bi pods on it.

I've been wanting to re-barrel my 270 win, and it's not even close to being worn out (I think I have about 1000 rounds through her). I just like the idea of a custom barrel. I've been thinking about packing up my action and sending it to Pac-Nor.

But if I did that, I'm not sure I'd have it come back as a 270. As much as I love that round, and it has served me well, I might have to do a 280 AI. Just to make my life more complicated if no other reason.

Or you could really step up to a significant improvement...to a 30-06!

I can't say you would be wrong in turning it into a 280AI with a Pac-Nor tube. I had them do my work on both my 280AI and 338-06AI and have been very impressed. The 280 will shoot under a tenth. The 338 is no slouch either.

My Super Grade Model 70, .270 Winchester was made in 1949 and has had two owners. I have owned it since 1973. I figure that I have put 3000 rounds through it of Partition bullets at about 3000 fps. It still shoots dime sized groups at 100 yards but I am sure that it has some throat erosion now. At my age and physical condition, it will last me through my life.

If/when I buy a custom barrel, it will most likely be a Benchmark or PacNor, just because I like keeping my spending local. But I sure wouldn't turn down a Brux, or Bartlein, or Hart, or a number of other makers.

Guy, what it the contour of the Krieger on your HB .308?
