Well, my parent's came down for Thanksgiving and I figured I would take him hunting down here, in Va. The club I hunt with runs dogs on Saturday's and holidays. While, I didn't grow up using hounds for deer, it can be pretty fun sometimes and does get the deer moving.

The very first stand of the day, we set up along a river bottom, and around 0830 or so, I heard the dogs on the upper end, starting to yelp and go through. Well, once you get used to the sounds of the hounds, yelping and such, it kinda perks you up. Well, my pops was set up about 300 yards away from me, with my other hunting partner between us, all waiting for the deer to come outta the woods.

This little buck came outta the thick, nasty crap in HIGH gear, I thought I had a better first shot on him, but I just grazed his belly, but lucky enough, it slowed him down to get a 2nd shot into him. The SST blew right through his neck.

I ended up using the Savage 220 slug gun with Hornady SST's. Very accurate slugs and a decent little slug gun.

My old man, with the little feller.

Pretty fun hunting with Pop's again. It has been awhile, but it was great to get out into the woods with him.

Nice Scottie. Spend all the time you can with him.....

That is just neat. Good that you have that time with him; I'm certain he enjoyed it.

Treasure every second, Scotty. Hunting is the closest I come to having my dad back these days. My wife doesn't understand it, but I'm confident it's the reason I've become so obsessed over the last decade.

There's nothing better than hunting with the family.
We lost my dad this summer and I am so grateful for being able to take him hunting the last few years.
This season has been bittersweet..
My son got his first buck yesterday and I sure wish his grandpa could have been with us.

Treasure the time

Very nice Scotty, congrats pal  ..Nothin beats a father and son hunt..my pops is long gone, but is always with me on every hunt...Lou

Good for you making the time to get out with your father Scotty. I know it meant more to him than he could ever possibly put into words. Nice job sir.

Scott, spend all the time you can with your folks. You can't believe how fast times go, and your standing there with out them. I have been there.

I still have fond memories of hunting with my dad. He has been dead since 1988 and I miss the times that we had outdoors. We fished, small hunted game and birds mostly, plus on a couple of occasions, went deer hunting. We also hunted moose in Quebec but never got one while hunting together. Enjoy the pleasure of hunting with your dad while you can. I miss mine and he has been gone almost 25 years now.

Miss the hunting times with my Dad, although he is still living and in another State. Cherish those times Scotty, they slip away fast. Thanks for sharing with us.

My dad died the year I moved to Canada (1980). I treasure the time I had with him, though we never hunted together. He had been terribly crippled during the war, one leg left almost two inches shorter than the other. It was very difficult for him to walk, but he had to. He was a blacksmith, and worked at the trade until the day he died. The wisdom he imparted seems somehow to come bubbling to the surface from time-to-time. I trust I can be as good a man as he.

Scotty,

Excellent buddy.
Glad you can hunt with your dad.

Scotty, enjoy the times as much as you can. I haven't hunted with mine in a few years due to him having a hard time walking anymore. To get him out, I have to find places he can get to and not too far. He calls a few times a week asking how the hunting is going. I'm sure they enjoy being out there with us also. We still laugh at some of the stories.

Scotty I am gonna sound like a broken record, but enjoy it immensely. I am the first hunter in my family and I hunt by myself pretty much all the time. My brother was my first hunting partner, but he passed away in 95 at the age of 18 and I have been by myself ever since. My FIL is coming into town to muzzleloader hunt next month and I can't wait..

Great hunting and way to break in the Savage and get it some blood!!!

I am very fortunate that two of my sons and my stepson all hunt as does my step-grandson who I sold my .280 to. I can not, because of health, hunt very much any more but I do take my grandson to the range and shoot with he and his dad sometimes. My youngest son (the lawyer) lives in New Yawk and does not associate with common rabble like me.

Hi Scotty, thank you for sharing .
That is one thing I wish I could have done with my Dad.

Blessings,
Dan
