I was approached on this forum by some who were concerned about me letting my grandson use my bear tag. Well, I went an bought another one but are you ready for this. I didn't have to, it was not illegal for me to let him use my tag.

2. A parent, grandparent or legal guardian may allow the parent’s, grandparent’s or guardian’s minor child or minor grandchild to use the parent’s, grand- parent’s or guardian’s big game permit or tag to take big game pursuant to the following requirements:
(a) The parent, grand parent or guardian must trans- fer the permit or tag to the child in a manner prescribed by the commission.
(b) The parent or guardian must accompany the child in the field or, if a grandparent allows a minor grandchild to use the grandparent’s permit or tag, the grandparent, parent or the child’s guardian must ac- company the child in the field. In either case, the adult must be within fifty yards of the child when the animal is taken.
(c) The child must possess a class F or class G license and, if under the age of fourteen, must satisfactorily complete the Arizona hunter education course or an- other comparable hunter education course that is ap- proved by the director.

We met all the requirements, Jordan is 13 teen and has an approved hunters education course card!!! Just wanted everyone to know I would have not been illegal in letting my grand use my bear tag or my up coming hunt with him using my Lion tag which will be transferred to him as prescribed above.

It is always best to verify with proper authorities before the action. I know that in British Columbia it is unlawful to take game on a tag that doesn't belong to you unless it is one of the specialized group hunts. Most jurisdictions in which I've lived have similar laws. You were right to be cautious until you could verify the law. A little extra money up front is far better than a ticket or worse still, a prohibition on hunting. Trust things work out with Jordan taking game.

Amen on being cautious. I was going off what a resident who lives there told me when I first decided to let him use my tag. Then you guys got me to thinking and I felt bad about myself assuming it was illegal. If I had checked out what the resident said by reading all the regulations, I would have avoided a lot of emotions and money. It was my fault in not checking it out even though someone who lives there said it was alright.

Glad you were able to get the good word on it Mike. Much less expensive in the end than guessing if it is right or wrong. Scotty

Well doggone it. I sure didn't intend to cost you any money - just wasn't sure if what you were planning to do was legal.

It's not legal here in Washington. Each hunter needs a license and tag here, no matter their age.

Phooey.

Not you fault, that was mine for not checking close enough and read all the way through the regulations.

Well, I know that here in Arizona you can transfer a tag to a minor but then I think you won't be allowed to have a firearm in your possession. Maybe that extra bear tag is not such a bad idea as you can now be a back up man should things go south.

Possibly the most important thing is that you were a good example to your grandson. Being honest, or the attempt at being honest even when it cost you lets him know that it is important. And that you paid extra to insure being above board should tell him a lot about your charactor and what is important. If he used your tag, and thought it was not legal, would taint that memory of hunting with you for the rest of his life.

Good on you!
