Didn't Draw a Grizzly Tag This Spring

Lou, if you are driving you could come through Regina & we could maybe break bread together. Or if things go right I could be a driving partner for a day or 2 or just company . I think I can still remember how to get to the good Doctor's residence or his place of employment:)!!
Just a thought as I am going to try & get away for at least 2 to 3 weeks this summer.

Blessings,
Dan

Gerry, what kind of camera are using to take such good photos?

It's a Panasonic DMC-ZS7 it has a 12 X optical zoom and apparently Leica lenses so maybe there is something to be said for the Leica lenses.... I like how compact it is and it is very user friendly too, can't speak highly enough about it.

They must have updated the camera by now with more features and more zoom most likely. I would definitely get another one, this one and the previous Panasonic (which was unfortunately lost on a sheep hunting trip) have been excellent. You won't go wrong if you buy one.

Now, here's the really dismaying thing about not drawing a tag this year; my associate pastor, a young man who had never hunted until last fall when I took his moose hunting, drew the only grizzly tag in this area! Now, he has the audacity to ask me to help him get a grizzly! Guess I'd better get that Brenneke shooting well; he'll need backup. He asked if a 30-06 would be enough rifle. I assured him that he would need a bigger rifle (heh, heh) and I'd gladly run interference by telling his wife of his need. Actually, we'll work up some hard hitting loads for his 30-06 and get him ready by April/May. The snow could go by late April, or it could hang on tenaciously until June in the higher elevations. Guess I'll make it out into the bush after all.

Yeah, sounds like a good reason to load some 200 PTs for that 30-06. Congrats to him for the tag!

Nice :) The 30-06 with a good bullet will deliver the goods. Hope it all comes together for him.

Is it snowing over by you yet? We just got a solid 1 1/2 feet of it yesterday but it has turned to rain now.

Light snow all day yesterday, accumulating to about four to six inches. However, it has warmed considerably. My thermometer reads -12 C, but the airport is reporting -2 C. I'm not bothering to put on a coat to go out later. It is positively balmy (or I am, can't decide which). We have rain predicted tonight and all day tomorrow. That can't be good for the ungulate population.

Dr Mike, looks like you get to go grizzly hunting anyway! Cool. So get him to the range, get real familiar with that rifle.

Think some 200 gr Partitions would work out well? I've noticed they tend to shoot great, and with careful handloading, some decent velocity can be had from the ol' .30-06 cartridge.

A lot of grizz have fallen to the .30-06, and for that matter likely to the .303 as well. Nothing wrong with a good .30 cal in the boiler room!

Best of luck, Guy

Glad you'll be able to get out, DrMike, and kudos on introducing another new hunter. And while I have every confidence in the 1906 cartridge, I like your plan to persuade his wife of the need for a new rifle. Perfect opportunity to appeal to her protective instincts... :)

Gerry, I somehow missed your picture earlier. Absolutely gorgeous. Keep them coming.

Guy,

I recommended a 200 grain Partition for his rifle. It is more than adequate for a mountain grizzly. It is not often that you will see a bear over eight feet, though I have encountered a few that were pushing nine. My favourite grizzly rifle to date has been a Model 94 chambered in .356 Winchester. I prefer to hold shots to under one hundred yards, which means he will have to hunt rather than shoot. I'll be compelling him to spend some time at the bench--both the reloading bench and the shooting bench. Hunting may be sooner rather than later--it is up to 0 C at the moment and we have a major melt taking place. Keeps this up and we'll be snow free by mid-April.

And yet I read some guy on HuntingBC saying the Partition is one of the worst grizzly bullets available  some people are idiots I guess. Of course many people are aware of the typically fine performance they offer.

We have a guide in this area that refuses to take anyone who is packing Partitions. Not all guides are that knowledgeable about terminal performance. They base their worldview on one incident that was likely a poor shot in the first place.

Seems crazy that someone can make a PT fail in any sorta standard cartridge to include the Weatherby/RUM in a normal hunting weight bullet. I just can't imagine one doing anything out of the ordinary unless it was just a bad shot as Mike mentioned. They just act right.
