So what do you think, do grip styles reduce felt recoil? What would it depend on? How well it fits your hand? Maybe grip surface to hand contact, flatter grip, grip material etc.... Same hand position?

What do you think.

I have seen some grips that have an air chamber built into the back portion of the grip to soften the recoil in the web of your hand.
Similar to the Pachmyer Decelerator pads.

Dont leave us hanging JD, who makes the grips with the air chamber and where can we veiw them. Also, do they make it for an encore? Thanks . Rick

I THINK it was T/C that offered this grip. If I run across it, I will post it for you. Sorry I can't be of any more help.

S&W's big 500 comes with some kind of much appreciated shock-absorbing material built into the grip. Very nice.

I don't know if they transplant directly onto other Smith & Wesson revolvers or not as I haven't tried. Thought I read that they fit at least one other frame size, but not sure.

Have always had less felt recoil when the grip was big enough for me to get my whole paw on it. The little "boot grips" that don't allow all the fingers to wrap around it are okay with mild .38's, but load up a light gun with serious .357's and it's a different story.

With the 1911, I'm happy as can be with a beavertail grip safety and rubber or wood grips.

I have a S&W 629 and tried several grips to take some of the sting out of recoil with heavier bullets/loads.

The most comfortable I've found (and I like to quite s lot) was an older design made of wood rather than rubber.

That is the Classic made by Eagle Grips - it is smooth rosewood with a palm swell and overall has greater surface area across the backstrap to distribute recoil.

I can only say that it feels made for my hand and is a lot more comfortable to me than the factory or Pachmayr grips that I purchased and tried after the factory grips did not really cut it.

My experience, FWIW

If you look at some of the custom grips, like Georgia Jim and others, they all have the bigger palm swell. I am shooting some on a Contender 7x30 waters and the recoil is minimal. Guess I am answering my own original question as 1st posted. Time and experience, time and experience.

+1

I also have O'l Georgia Jim wood on my contender and with the better fit to my hand, felt recoil is less.
