Just got the good news. I am a successful applicant for a wolf permit in MN. Now I need to get serious about this! Wish me luck, I'll need it.

Why don't you hunt on the border and kill any wolf that is heading east towards Wisc or the U.P? We need all the help we can get.

Just checked the DNR website...I GOT ONE TOO!! Now I need to go buy the license. I haven't received anything in the mail yet, but using my drivers license # it says I was drawn. This made my night...
What part of the state will you be hunting?

I'll be hunting near Ely in the Burntside ridge deer wintering yards by snowmobile late season. If I get word of some good fresh deer kills just inside the BW I may snowshoe in to some ambush sites.

I've got a place to stay right on Burntside and another near where Chainsaw sisters saloon used to be. Both are a few minutes by sled from as many spots as I can hunt.

God willing I get one, I think USA Foxx in Duluth will tan a wolf pelt. They've done some beaver and fox garments for me, top notch stuff.

Your chances sound better than mine as far as wolf density goes. I will be hunting about 25 miles NW of DL where there are a few wolves. I do hear them howling at night and we find their tracks on the property after the snow flies. Good luck.

Joel, that is just great! Superb! Man, I can't wait for your report in addition to Polaris'.

My wolf hunting will be in conjunction with the early deer rifle season in Minnesota (Nov. 3-11) for the zone we hunt in. I will be using a Winchester model 1886 in 45-70 for the thick brushy areas that my stand is set up in. I will also have a 6.5WSM for hunting a clear-cut bowl that was logged about 4 years ago, that will allow me shots up to 1K. There will be some calling over gut piles (hopefully), but mostly just watching for them while deer hunting.
I had a friend shoot a buck two years ago that had a wolf trailing behind it and walk up after the shot to grab the deer around the throat and try to drag it off. A few shots over it's head by my buddy finally made it run off. Pretty aggressive animals and not afraid of much since they haven't been hunted (legally  ) in the state before.

This may finally be the real benefit of wolf reintroduction for sportsman who have been adversily impacted by wold reintroduction to elk herds. Finally, some few lucky souls of us will get a on-in-a-lifetime chance to kill and wild gray wolf trophy! I think that a wolf rug would be a super trophy! Congratulations to those who got permits or licences.

Good luck fellas!
I would add a Fox Pro electronic caller w/ remote along with an open reed to the bag of tricks.
Calling predators is exciting, you the caller become the hunted!

Man, that is great Joel! I hope you are able to lay the smack down on one of them furred beasts!

Went on-line and purchased the license this morning...$32.55 with the fees! Not a bad price for the opportunity.

I'll probably be packing the trusty 280 rem mauser custom. Need to work up some loads yet, if nothing pans out I'll use my standard load with the 160 NP or my standard LR load 160 Speer BTSP.
Testing the 145 Speer GS and BTSP this fall. Either of those would work.

Might carry the mosin sniper with 174 SMKs if I feel like playing Saitsev though. I'm comfortable with that rifle to 400 yards in the wind, 600 in the calm from vintage sniper competition and practice.
