I am new to reloading and i just got a box of the e-tip 150 grain .284 to use for reloading for my 7mm WSM, i also have the latest nosler book but the bullets are not in there, should i just go with the load recommendations for the 150 grain bullets that are in the book or something else. Sorry for the newbie ?, but any help would be appreciated

Welcome to the forum, glad youare here.
The 7mm 150 gr E-Tip is a great bullet but you need to undersatand that the longer bearing surface of this bullet will cause pressure spikes. Start your load development at the suggested starting load for your chosen powder and work up to the mid range load, which is your MAX load for the E-Tip bullets.
The E-Tips like a lot of jump and best accuracy seems to be about .100" off the lands.

This is a very accurate bullet and offers a lot of penetration!

I used a 130 grain E-Tip to tag a nice bull a year and a half past. The bullets can be very accurate. Take the directions JD338 provided seriously; they will make a difference in success for you.

thanks for the input, but i am not sure about what you mean by off the lands.

The distance from the bullets ogive to the beginning of the rifling in the barrel.

on nosler's website i read that they recommend seating the bullets between 0.050" and 0.090" off the lands, now just to see if i am getting this right that would mean that the one seated 0.090" would be further into the shell making the coal (cartridge overall length) shorter that the 0.050", is that correct.

You are correct. An easy way to check this is to get a Hornady lock-n-load OAL gauge.

Spot on buddy.
The instructions that are shipped with the bullets indicate best results were from .050 -.100" off the lands. My experience is limited to .257 100 gr, 7mm 150 gr and 338 200 gr E-Tips and my best results were at .100" off the lands. A few others here had similar results when loaded .100" off the lands.

dezmick,

I spent November and December breaking in a new Nosler TGR in .280 Ackley. I wanted to stick with extreme powder of Hodgdon H4831SC. Hopefully a trip to Alaska in the next couple of years. I tried the 140 E-Tip and was unsuccessful in keeping the three shot groups under .5 inch.

Next went to the 150 E-Tip which will retain 95% or 142.5 grains and near 3000 FPS. Started low according to the book and worked up to 58.5 grains touched off with Federal 215 primers.

57.5 grains shot real well right at .5 inch and I figured that was the winner. It was a lousy windy day and I packed up and went home. Loaded up (10) more.

Next day at the range I found (3) rounds at 58.0 and (3) rounds at 58.5 Shot the 57.5 load and it was consistent at under .5 inch Windy and cold and wanted to recover brass from the 58's asnd 58.5's. Shot rapidly and the 58's right at one half inch. Fired the (3) with 58.5 quickly, under one minute of time with frozen hands and runny eyes. Got my brass back, Went down to collect target board. The (3) 58.5's printed at .154" Went home with a huge smile. Loaded (10) 58.5 and at the range the next morning shot a .159" and a .151"

Left the range and drove four miles to a good coyote area and one volunteered for the field study at 271 yards. The exit hole was about the size of a softball

Judging from the exit wound I would not hesitate shooting any deer, hog or Elk with the 150 grain Nosler E-Tip out of the .280 Ackley.

The bullet is seated .100" inch off the lands.

Be patient and good luck.

Great field report Jerry! That is some great shooting. What kind of speeds are you getting out of the 150's? Scotty

Jerry,

That is a great field report. I'm certainly having good success with E-Tips in a variety of cartridges. I presently have loads worked up in my 30-06, a 280 and a 260. I just waiting for the weather to warm a little (-28 is a bit brisk for this old man). How did you get that coyote to volunteer? Generally, they are shy and reluctant to advance the cause of ballistics.

beretzs,

Velocity has been real good within +/- 10 FPS of 2900 FPS. Probably could go faster, but why. Accuracy is stellar. Biggest problem now is getting a new rifle to play with.

Ordered the Nosler Legacy in .35 Whelan. Should be ready by late April. Plan is for 225 AccuBond load.

JD, you are going to have to shoot another target, I have that one memorized. If you got it that good then, I think if you try you could actually do better trying some more. At least we would all get to see the consistency of the E-Tip in that Caliber. Shoot a few more with that Hunting rifle and show folks that a hunting rifle can be consistent using the e-tip in that caliber. Anyway, I want a new target, it can't cost you that much to do some more loads on paper for us. Has the snow melted yet for you to get out?   Oh, as I have told you before, that is great shooting indeed. :)

Jerry,

Nice shooting buddy! You are set to go with the 280 AI!

BTW, you are going to love the 35 Whelen. The 225 gr AB loaded with RL 15 will ne nipping at the heels of the 338 Win Mag.

bullet,

My focus has been on the 140 gr AB in the 280 AI. I am going to go with a new scope, VX-3 3.5-10x40mm with CDS dials and get her set up for a WY antelope hunt this fall.

At your request, I will reshoot the 150 gr E-Tip just for you.

Hey, don't waste your time if you have switched to the 140gr AB. Man just practice with that load for the hunt. Don't go messing with things, I thought you were still using the E-Tip load. How does the AB shoot in that rifle?

Jerry! That 35 Whelen is an awesome choice I have been mulling over quite alot. Between that and the 280AI you would have a dream team of rifles and like Jim said, RL15 and the Nosler PT's or AB would be all a feller could ever ask for. The Whelen is an awesome cartridge! Scotty

The 140 gr AB is shooting in the .5's at 3175 fps. Should work well on speed goats!

Jim,

Those sound like some excellent groups. They would work for almost anything at those velocities.
