Efficient load development

I would like to work up a load for a 100 gr. bullet in my 25-06 factory Remington with Reloder 17. Alliance lists 53 as a max, so I would like to work from 47.7 to 53. What is the most efficient way to do this?

I was thinking 3 rounds each at .5 intervals, pick the best and play with seating? Or is there a better way? Maybe I'll miss something or approach max too quickly taking big jumps like this. I just don't want to shoot a million rounds. Thanks
 
Looking at a QL projection with 100 grain Partitions, and I see several things that would guide me in working up a load.

First, I likely have some room to play. Then, RL17 may not be the most efficient powder or provide the best results.

Using RL17 may be understandable if that is what is available, however. In that instance, dropping back to 47 grains and working up in 0.5 grain increments may be too small an increment to be counted as efficient. Because of the projected velocities, I'd be inclined to begin at around 49 grains and work up in two grain increments. Based on QL, I'd be inclined to begin at 51 grains and work up in two grain increments. You'll see very quickly whether a load shows potential or not even at these larger increments. This is my experience. As the saying goes, YMMV.
 
My 2 cents.... I tried re 17 twice in my 2506. I did not get good accuracy either time but I did not give it a fair test with just two tries and two different bullets. in the charts above the powders with a little more speed than re 17 are pretty highly compressed or a little hard to find. That said re 22 is my favorite powder in the 2506 and it is for a lot of other people.
Both times I tried re 17 in my 2506 it tracked perfectly with quick load so I would definitely go along with Mike's workup ideas as shown in the chart above. Fwiw....the 110 AccuBond is showing some promise in my 2506... and I'm working hard to get it super consistent. The one bullet my gun really likes across a couple different powders is very accurate is the 117 Hornady bt.
 
See now I'm glad I asked! That changes how I'll do things. Well I have read online quite a few people talking RL17 up for velocity and accuracy even if it doesn't pencil out, and I have it so I thought I'd give it a try for a 100 gr. antelope load. I'd love to try other powders but I need to start using what I have, which is RL17, RL19, IMR7828, H4350, and Retumbo. How is your list of powders sorted?
 
When you get started make sure you have a long Mikes chart so you can make sure your velocities are tracking close to what is on there... I see he dialed in a 24-inch barrel of that would be a little different than a 22.
The powider chart listed up above goes by the fastest speed at equal pressure..... but the pressure is set at 64 K which is top pressure you would ever want to get close to.

From highest velocity generated to lowest. Velocities are not that different. If you chose to use RL19 or IMR 7828, you wouldn't see a great difference in velocity.
 
Is IMR 7977 too new to be in the QuickLoad data? That powder sure looks interesting. I was surprised no retumbo either - that must be better for the heavier bullets?
 
I'd take a hard look at the 115 gr BT with Retumbo.
That would make for an excellent long range antelope load. ;)

7977 is a virtual twin to re 25 in burn rate. Another new powder on the market which is really giving a monster boost to the 270 Winchester and would probably play fantastically well in the 2506 is Re 26.
 
RL26 has been amazing in my 25-06 with 100 grain Etips. Nearly 3400 and very good accuracy.

I use Retumbo with my 120 Partition load, never tried the 115. I do have about 2 pounds of it though. I kind of had my heart set on 100 grainers though - I bought a box of 100 gr TTSXs - I actually bought two then thought better of it. I do have a box of 110 Accubonds I've never tried as well but wanted to try the 100s.

RL26 sounds awesome - probably one of those hard to get ones eh?

CCIBR2. Tried the CCI250's and the BR2'a trumped them accuracy wise. Doesn't seem to be a hard powder to light off.
 
Awesome setup.....laser beam speed.....a the bullet with a bc that pretty much matches most 120 Cup n cores... and on game performance that most likely actually exceeds 120 cup n cores!
 
Once you pick your powder do a OCW test by Dan Newberry to start your load development

I hate to be a pain but DrMike could you (or anyone else) run the quickload for RL17 and RL26 for a 100 gr Barnes TTSX? I'm wishing I bought e-tips now but oh well...
