She drew the late cow tag here in 8A (Idaho). This tag is a meat tag and if you actually get out of the rig and get on a wheeler or foot and get behind a gate you can take your time.

Here are the rules in no particular order that I've explained to her on Cow Elk.
1.0 Uphill from trail.
2.0 Less then 100yds.
3.0 Before noon.

This hunt is while we are Deer hunting in there, you can take your time and shoot when all the "conditions" are right. She wants to use her 243. I load 100PT for her and she has killed all deer with one shot. I really need this to go well and am torn between a little more gun (270WSM loaded down) or the gun she is used to and shoots WELL. I'm leaning towards her 243 and keeping it a close calm shot on a Cow.

Congratulations to your good lady. Trust she tags a fine cow.

Congratulations o your wife for pulling a cow tag.
What is she going to be hunting with?

You guys will have a great time:) I would let her use her rifle
And just place her in a position to succeed:)

Blessings,
Dan

Congrats on the tag, I think if she shoots her 243 okay, she will do fine with the PT's. If she shoots it well, I can't see a cow getting away.

Congratulations on the great tag. Practice with her from now until the hunt. Sounds like she shoots really well already. I think you will be fine. Pick a good shot and one she is comfortable taking. One idea even though she has taken deer is this. My son had already shot deer and antelope, but when he got a cow tag for a ranch near Missoula a couple years ago, he was going to be hunting with a young man who had never hunted. I bought some of the large paper archery elk targets that you stick up on a hay bail or some type of backstop to shoot. I placed those at various distances out to 300 yards and let the boys shoot at them. They have lines and kill zones on them, but at longer ranges you cannot see those in the scope so it is as if they were looking at a smaller elk, maybe a longer shot. They both did really well on the range and both killed their elk with one shot each! One used a 25-06 and one a 6mm Remington.

I am tickled for your wife and let her know everyone is pulling for her.
David
