Went out shooting today and had a couple of problems, both guns I shot were Tikka T-3's.
First one a 22-250 that I had just cleaned last night, I guess 4 different times when opening the bolt it didn't pull out the empty case. Had to recycle the bolt and then it worked oka. Last night I loaded some different loads up using new WW brass that I only neck resized. The temp was 30 degrees, this is a new gun and I have only shot about 100 times, could either of these be the problem or could it be the bolt, never had it happen when the weather was nicer and with different bullets.
Second one a 25-06 that on 3 different times the bullet did not go off. I loaded them this year, primers were Winchester LR. The firing pin did hit them, could it be a batch of bad primers/possibly dirty bolt(cleaned during deer season) or the weather? Any thoughts? Thanks

Recently last spring I had an issue with several rounds not going off, along with a few severe hang-fires...caliber .300RUM. However I was using bench-rest primers....just not "enough" to get the fire lit ! I supose depending on powder type?? and how the powder happens to be laying in the case ?? But certianly shouldn't need a mag primer to light the 25-06.
Do you clean the primer pockets? and inspect the flash hole?

As for the 22-250, I assume the brass was once fired from that rifle? If not, then neck sizing just didn't create proper headspace. You should check the brass carefully if it was not once fired in that rifle, as it may be stretched at the case-head and in danger of separating, from excessive headspace.

With the 25-06, was the dent in the primers the same as the ones that went off, or shallower? If it is the same, I don't know what to tell you. Shallower, then there may also be a headspace problem here, too.

Good luck with diagnosing it.

pretty good story about an alaskan guide i believe that took a client out that had a rifle that wouldn't fire and when they got in the small plane the action warmed up and the firing pin dropped and fired. scared and embarrassed the guide and hunter. Too much oil in the cold weather.

dubyam, thanks for the info on the 22-250, the brass was new, never fired in this gun. I went and loaded another bunch of 15, full length resized all of them this time with a good cleaning(exact same loads other than that) and they all shot fine with none of the problems I encountered previously. Lesson learned here, thanks. Tim
