Ever have to shim optics?

So I have this Winchester SXR semi-auto 270WSM that shoots very well. My problem is @ 100yds my scope is out of travel vertically. I am shooting about 1 1/2" high at 100 yards but there is no way to move the group any higher. I first thought there was something wrong with the scope so I put another one on it and it has the exact same problem only it was 6" low and maxed out. So do any of you have experiences you would like to share as to how to rectify this problem? The gun currently wears a Leupold VXII 3-9x40 with leupold rings and base.

Easiest fix (and best looking, most reliable, etc.) is to switch to the Burris Signature rings ($35) and get some of the offset inserts ($10-15). For this price you'll have good looking rings (look almost identical to the Leupolds) and you'll be able to use the offset inserts to put as much as 30moa back into the scope, which should get you right close to center of adjustments at 100yds. I've got this setup on two different rifles (the first one because it had elevation issues, the second because it was another model of the first and I just wasn't taking any chances. Works like a charm and has held zero for several years, each.

I had to shim the base on my M1895. I contacted Leupold and they sent me shims at no charge.

Same here. Had to shim a one-piece base on my 1895 Marlin Guide Gun. A thin copper shim under the base worked wonders. Never had a problem with it either.

+ 1 on this idea - works great, solves problems, looks great and rings never leave ring marks on your scope tube.

dubyam nailed this one. Shimming works, and I've had to do it; but the Burris rings work very well indeed.

In my experience, shimming is a bad deal. I've done it, then found other mounts that lined up better. Guess what? My rifle suddenly got more accurate.

Thanks to all of you for the words of advice. I will look into those burris rings and offset inserts and let you know how they work out...

Looking forward to seeing if it corrects your issues with the 270WSM.. Can't have a down 270WSM on the boards, makes us look bad! Scotty

Good thing I have two 270WSM's

One Browning and one Winchester. No issues with the X-bolt

Man, you are a guy right after my own heart! How does your Browning shoot? Scotty

How does your Browning shoot?

By pulling the trigger.

Most of the Brownings I've shot were very decent rifles. They seem to be making a good product.

Dang Mike, it is starting already! Scotty

Man, there is no stopping you crazy Canucks!

I think the thread topics here are a mere suggestion, since about 2 or 3 replies and they are usually shifted to something else, way more exciting! Scotty

A bit late on this one, but as other's have already mentioned,,,,,
I switched to Burris Sig oand or Sig Zee ring sometime back. I won't use any other ring as of now!!

Scotty my Browning shoots very well when I pull the trigger   In all seriousness I have very little trouble getting half inch groups consistently. I get a real kick out of the funny posts all over this forum, dont mind them at all  Doc Mike is pretty quick on the trigger with some of his replies

You do have to keep a sharp eye on that Doc!

I have a .0010 piece of Brass shim under the front base on my Mauser. Never had problems I can attribute to it....but when I cant shoot makes me wonder. Its always been me or my reloads. CL
