I was thinking yesterday and have a question. I for the most part have a different powder for each cal. I know that I could use RL19 or H4350 for may different ones but that does not always work. So my question, do the big name factories use the same powder for many different rounds? I could not see them changing everything up when they go from cal to cal. I may be wrong but I would guess that they have a few go to powders and use them for everything.

Million dollar question WT. I bet as many answers you get, just as many would be guesses. I would think they work in certain burn rates and try to keep the different amounts to a minimum, but again, just like I said, just a guess on my part..

Some do some don't. Most loads use bulk canister type or special blends not available to us..

Not much help I know.

Most factory ammunition is produced with a non-canister powder that is of the proper burn rate for case capacity and bullet weight to yield optimal velocity in their test systems.

The guys from Alliant have posted over on Shotgunworld and simply stated that a manufacturer specifies a burn rate, bulk density and price. They have no qualms about shopping around for the cheapest version of what they are looking for.
