Failures To Extract... Advice?

Hey folks.

I happened to be running some snap caps through my dad's Savage 110 Scout today for some dry fire drills, but a couple of the cartridges failed to extract. Anyone know what the most common causes of this might be? Could it be the snap caps maybe (they are pretty much brand new, A-Zoom brand snap caps.)? Or can that be caused by my way of manipulating the bolt? It is only my second time handling the rifle.

Thoughts or advice?

Make sure there aren't any mold lines on the snap caps. They are injection molded and can have mold lines. Also make sure the rim isn't so thick that it wont let the extractor slip over the rim. I doubt there is anything wrong with the chamber if the rifle cycles properly when firing. It's most likely something with the snap caps.

Huh. Nope - not sure why - those aluminum A-Zoom snap caps are usually real good.

Take a look at the rifle, see if it's clean, lightly lubed, work the bolt briskly and fully.

It is so weird. I tried to single out specific snap caps that failed, but still had random failures with no consistency. I took a cap that had failed and ran it through over and over (ten times) but didn't have it fail again. I intentionally tried to move the bolt in all the wrong ways in order to cause a repeatable failure, but it showed absolutely no change in frequency. (Shrug). Hopefully with brass it won't have the same issue. Fingers crossed me and my Dad will be taking it out to the range soon.
