Junior and I seized the opportunity for some Father's Day fun at the range. We hauled along a .30-30 Marlin, a 7mm Rem mag Ruger and The .257 Weatherby/Mauser as well as a good amount of ammo and some targets. This was strictly a short-range affair, I'm burning up some 7mm ammo I'm not fond of, but it works for practice. He's getting used to the Weatherby/Mauser and we both had fun with the Marlin. Here's a few photos:

With the sling rigged like this, I can generally hold 1-2 MOA, close or far.

Good fun! Our first hunt this fall is for bear here in Washington in September, so we're going to be practicing mostly with the hunting rifles for the next couple of months.

It looks as if it was a great day. Good job. Thanks for sharing this post.

Guy,

Looks like you and your son had a great day! How is the Weatherby project coming along?
BTW, Happy Fathers Day to ya.

Guy -
Looks like a great way to spend Father's Day !

That lever gun looks like it could be a lot of fun........

Project Weatherby is finally rolling! My son and I headed out the day after his high school graduation. We camped and fished and goofed off until we got to Grandpa's house, then we goofed off some more and Grandpa presented the lad with Great Grandpa's famous Weatherby/Mauser... Well, locally famous in the late 1940's at any rate. We also got a good dose of stories and some of Dad's handloaded ammo along with the rifle. Very cool.

Today was the first range trip with it for Junior. He likes it.

I ordered 100 new pieces of Norma brass for it and will start handloading for it soon. May need new dies, as the originals from the 1940's were made to neck down shortened .300 H&H brass with thicker necks than we have now with modern commercial brass. I noticed some of the ammo Dad loaded with once-fired Weatherby brass wasn't gripping the bullet real tight. Must avoid that problem for hunting ammo!

We will see how it all goes, but I think it's terrific that my youngest son has taken possession of the 60+ year old rifle, and that he likes it!

What a great and meaningful gift for your son. It is a great cartridge made greater still by the fact that his grandpa used it.
