Favourite Rifles, Cartridges

Good point about 22 lr's Guy, about 8 years ago my search ended for the perfect 22 with this CZ 452 American.

This is my first contribution here but I've been following this forum for quite a while.

My favorite rifle/cartridge combos and the ones that get the most use are: Sako Bavarian carbine in 6.5 Swede, Kimber Mountain Ascent 280AI, Mauser M12 9.3x63, and Sako 85 338 Fed. All are great shooting rifles with smooth actions and fantastic cartridges that shoot and perform well.

Welcome aboard, Castlewoods. Those are some interesting cartridges that you hold out as favourites. You have a 9.3X63 RWS? Cool! I shoot a 9.3X64 Brenneke, which I truly enjoy. The 338 Federal is another rifle that I enjoy more than I should. Again, welcome aboard.

Well, I was getting excited for a bit. The 9.3X62 is a great cartridge that has not enjoyed the popularity it deserves in North America. It does appear that this situation is changing somewhat in recent years. However, if you had a 9.3X63, well that would be the first I've known of on this site. My 9.3X64 is rare enough.

WOW, tough question.
Currently my fav is my Ruger M77 MKII in 257 Roberts.
Next would be my Marlin 444 SS.
I do have a sporterized 1891 Argentine mauser in 7.65x53 that holds a special place in my heart. It shoots very well, and looks very nice too.

Take care
Ed

Castle woods, Hello and welcome!

You have a nice, eclectic collection of calibers! I am waiting for my new Sako in 6.5x55, building my 338 Federal on a Winchester Model 88 as we speak, and have a King barrel in 9.3x62 waiting to be finished and mounted on a Ruger 77 when time and dollars permit.

And yes, do not forget to mention your rim fires if they are your favourites or use them the most...no discriminating between centre fires and rim fires was intended in this thread!

I know several really enjoy their Marlin 39A's. I have not yet had the pleasure of playing with one.

I was excited to find a Winchester Model 69A 22 LR target rifle last year to replace the carbine my grandfather had givens us kids. Really enjoyed shooting and hunting with it this last year. Just doesn't have the attachment of the one grandpa gave us. I have to admit that as far as rim fires go, my customized Magnum Research in 17 Mach II has to be my favourite rim fire. It is the one that I used to take a lynx in 2015 that DrMike posted about.

Again welcome aboard Castle woods, I am sure that you are going to enjoy this forum as there is great people here with endless amounts of knowledge (y).
My favourite calibre of all time would be the 270win but as DrMike stated with age l have broadened my interests. I would state that in the last 5 years or so I have really turned to the less popular calibers like the 35 Whelen or the 280AI. These calibers really are accurate & just fun to shoot.

Blessings,
Dan

My favorite rifle and cartridge would be extremely difficult to put into any order as each of my top three has designs on my heart. If I had to though, right now it is my .280 AI I had built on the Winchester Model 70. It just had to be chambered in either a .280 Remington or .280 AI. Love that cartridge.

In a two way tie for second would be first up my 6mm Remington in my Ruger 1B. Absolutely love that cartridge and it has accounted for probably 30 antelope and 20 deer or more. Lots of coyotes as well! My father gave me a 6mm Remington in a Remington Model 600 and with that rifle I took my first antelope and deer with. It now belongs to my son. You can see where this 6mm Remington infatuation came from, and truly the cartridge is that good! (Sure nice to see Hornady making brass for it! Come on Nosler!)

And right in there for the tie at second would be my Ruger 1B in 30-06. It uses 165 gr. Partitions & Accubonds at 2940 fps and is incredibly accurate. The Ruger #1's in my eyes are every bit as classic and sensational as the Winchester Model 70 controlled round feed. I highly suggest that you all shoot one at least once in your life and you will feel the pull towards buying one too!

Gil

Is your new Sako 6.5 x 55 , a Bavarian ? As mentioned earlier I bought one and really like it. I know that type of firearm is not for everyone, but for some reason I really like the look and feel if it

Best Regards

Jamila

All my rifles get field time because I'm a nerd and like to rotate but the one that comes to mind when I'm forced to pick a favorite is a 280 Rem Model 70 featherweight. It shot like shit till I bedded the stock. My first bedding job and I was horrified the entire cure time that I had just permaglued the stock and action but it turned out great and the rifle shoot great too. 150 grain Partitions under a stiff load of IMR 4350 at 2950fps.

My next bolt action will be a Sako 85 Hunter in 7mm-08 to be its little brother. Like having two pairs of boots for the same purpose so you can rotate them to make them last twice as long.

Hey Gil I found this for you at a gun show today, Its been well used has a Williams peep and the left side was drilled and tapped for a scope mount. The asking price was only $1350.00 US dollars. I thought it was way too much considering the condition.

Beautiful 280 Featherweight.

Favorite hunting rifle is my Model 70, a 30-06 for 40+ years, now a 25-06 with a Pac-Nor barrel.

But this is my favorite rifle, my Great Grandfather's 45-70, don't shoot it anymore though.

AFG270, very cool!!! There is obviously some family history with that rifle. Any good stories to share?

Jamila, the Sako on order is the Hunter model, as I have a better chance of getting one sooner and as it will be scoped, I wasn't worried about open sights. I felt that the 9.3x62 should be the Bavarian as I would want the open sights not only for back up, but for those instances where going into the brush and want to detach the scope and use the open sights for close quarters work, or for when I want to hunt without a scope. I still enjoy shooting and hunting with open sights! For using a scope, the Hunter model fits me better. The Bavarian fits me better for using the open sights.

Roger, thanks for thinking of me on the 348! I agree, in that condition the price is definitely higher than I would be willing to pay, as by the time I pay the exchange rate, import fees, freight and taxes, it would land here for somewhere between $2300-2400! I like the Williams sight, but would not be excited about having the action drilled. I don't mind well used, as long as it was cared for well and the bore is still in good condition (as AFG270's rifle appears to be). Was the Marlin overpriced too?

AFG270, nice rifle!

Seems like we have as many 280/280AI fans on here as we do 35 Whelen/35 Whelen AI fans! Those with both would be well covered for anything short of the Big 5.

Gill all the guns at this show was going for premium prices except for one Sako Golden Bear which I almost bought that was carrying a $550 price tag and looked as if it had been a safe queen.
There was also a Winchester M100 laying beside the Marlin and a Glenfield to the right.

Here's a picture of the left side where it had been drilled and tapped.
