Fellas, afew weeks ago we weighed in on the topic of best brass. I can now say from experience that preloaded federal brass is last on my list. I bought 2 boxes (40 rounds) of Federal so my wife dont shoot up my good handloads. Of the 40 cases 17 left the shell of the primer in the pocket when i decapped. I know that if left too long this might happen but these cases were taken care of in a matter of less than 24 hrs. I dont know how to remove the left behind carcass of what used to be a primer, any ideas?

P.S. all the above mentioned cases were 223 remington

Just about the only suggestion I have is to use a primer pocket swager or a primer pocket uniformer to shear it out. I can tell you the reason that happens is that at some point prior to your getting them, the cartridges were subjected to some level of moisture, probably stored in a humid area, and the primers corroded to the case. I'd just toss the cases, myself. That's what I did with some Remington 243 that happened to.

The trash can is where they are headed but its funny because federal puts that little red ring around primer to keep moisture out.

I wonder if that little red ring of stuff seeps in and glues the primer in place?

Weird. I have pretty much a never-ending supply of .308 Federal brass. It reloads very nicely. A little "soft" so a few warm loads see the primer pocket open up quite a bit, but otherwise good ammo and good brass. Never had a problem loading it.
