Well with all the hype on the internet about shooting coyotes at 1200 to 1600 yds I am not sure this will interest anyone anymore. But having shot literally hundreds of coyotes in the last 35 years , I had shot lots of them at 300 yds and some even more, but had NEVER shot one at a legit 400yds.
Here is a picture of our bait in the foreground, that is exactly 300 yds. The ledge isle to the right with the bushes, is exactly 416 yds, the dead coyote laying on its side right out passed the bait; is 456 yds, And the orange plate, hanging in the tree far right is 552yds. And the far woods out beyond the coyote, is right at 600yds. So just for fun, thought I would post it, as this is our "longest shot ever" on a songdog! (y) Double click on the photo and its a lot lighter and easier to see it all, as taken with a Nikkor lens fully zoomed at 200mm!

Nice. And I'll bet not much holdover with your quarter-bore.

Nice shot Earle, way to go!
A 1/4 mile coyote is a small target.

Congratulations! This was with your sporter-weight .25-06 hunting rifle?

Nicely done. That's a little farther than the 420 yard coyote I nailed with my 25-06 in Wyoming a few years ago.

I like your coyote hunting setup!

Practise makes perfect. Congratulations. Good picture to put matters in perspective.

Well thanks for all the kind words, of course the gun is lined up dead on at 300yds and so just held at the top of his back with the horizontal cross wire, and up the front leg with the vertical wire, I am assuming he is hit in the bottom of the chest somewhere, ice is so rotten not going to be able to retrieve him.................... probably isn't much to the best of the west crowd, but still considered a long shot around the East.........lol

Earle,
I have always said 400 yards separates the men from the boys. At this distance and beyond,
reading the wind is the hard part.

JD338

Well that is so true Jim, but in this case and to our advantage , there was NOT a breath of wind .........
Actually the coyotes mate, was just out there , looking for em! But ran off before we could get ready to shoot! So there may be another chance, to try a 450 yder again, Although we have an 8 mph wind today, almost direct cross wind, right now, so just ran the numbers on Strelok, and it looks like 10.16" of correction; So if he comes back out, we will see if it can be repeated again!

Congratulations on a great shot at a small target. Nice to have a spot where you can stretch out like that.

Nice job! You get the hide skinned off one of those, even a large coyote, and there is not lot of target there.

As Guy said, was this a 25-06??

Sorry everyone, I didn't realize I had not listed the caliber, it is the Rem 700 SPS in 25 Whelen, shooting a 90gr BlitzKing bullet with 60gr of RL25 under it , and finding it to be a coyote extraordinaire combo, Very happy with the gun, the scope, and the loads. Got everything working just right for a LR coyote outfit!EMDR, Weaver.jpg

well done Earle!

Earle, 1200 to 1600 yards, do you know someone that hunts at those distances ( referring to your first post ) I was impressed with your 456 yard shot. 1200 to 1600 --whoa

Cheyenne,
I am just being sarcastic, as there is a few videos on Youtube of coyote kills at over a thousand yards! Which I have no
Problem with whatso ever. 6/800 ft lbs will kill a coyote. However taking a crack at an Elk or Moose out behond a 1000 yds, is a different situation, as all calibers are basically running out of gas........... all these videos showing 1400lb Bulls dropping, like they are being hit at 200 yds, but they all are claiming 12/1500 yds, is getting pretty tiresome for us........... to me striking a 800lb elk unless precisely hit with any bullet that is down below 1000ft lbs of energy is a wounded bull........... simple as that. In a 15 mph xwind, (approximately 13ft of holding into that much wind, at 1000yds) One could mount all the Huskamaw scopes, you want to ,and at 1000yds plus , to be able to precisely hit the animal ,(with a bullet that now has less than a thousand ft lbs of energy) Exactly where you would need to , while holding off the animal two full body widths, is imho a pure fairy tale. :?

Congratulations Earle that is some fine shooting, thank you for the post with photos (y)!!
The 25 Whelen is one flat shooting rifle.

Blessings,
Dan
