Well, I couldn't stand it any longer. Its gusting up to 20+ mph here today and I had a few minutes. I robbed the scope off my 338 WM, mounted it to the 338R and headed to the range.

The bottom left group is shots number 4 and 5 down the barrel. I only had two of that load. 81 gr 7828ssc under a 225 SST @ 3.550 lit by a 215M. No chrony data for any of these (wind would have blown it over).

The mid three shots are the same specs, but with 82gr 7828. Shot the bottom one, then the top, then another right next to the first bottom one.

The top four shots are 83 gr 7828. My buddie Andrew, and brother Aaron, both shot two. I'm guessing based on research (another guy on LRH has some results posted with 7828 and a 225 AB), and just kind of throwing a dart, but this load should be around 3050 fps.

Recoil is very managable. I would equate it to a 270 Win. maybe a bit more. I can't wait for a calm day. I have some ladders to shoot with RL-22, H1000, and Magnum. From the looks of things I might want to play around with 7828 a bit more as well. I didn't get any signs of pressure with 7828 yet.

It is incredible when a new rifle surfaces. I fully understand that it is nearly impossible to wait for a calm day to shoot. Good opening set of loads, Jake.

Nice job Jake.
I don't think it will take too long for you to find a shooter load.
What about Retumbo?

Jim, I might give it a try, but I think it might be a bit on the slow side. We'll see. My cases are pretty dang full with the top end of the ladders that I have loaded. I'll know more as I feel her out. It does appear to want to try to shoot though.

I need to get a good calm day so I can set my chrony up and really learn a thing or two about it. I have a few meetings the rest of the week, but if I can get out of the office I'm sure going to!

Thanks, Mike. I'm just using the 225 SST right now to develop some peramiters for load data. AS soon as I find the top ends, or a powder that seems to shoot better than the others I'll move over and start working up some loads for the 225 AB.

On a side note, the 225 SST, doesn't hold together at all out of this gun into a dirt bank @ 100 yards. Looked like some twisted copper pancakes.

Looking good so far with 7828. Think that will be what I try first after talking to you and seeing the first groups.

Definitely an awesome round in a sharp looking rig! I'm sure that those of you who shoot large-bore breaked (broke? lol) rifles will know what I mean when I say the recoil, while forceful, is tamed to a not unpleasant shove. I'd say Jake's comparison to a 270 is accurate, thought I would say that a 270's recoil is "sharper" if that makes any sense.

Can't wait to see you thump something with it! (Looks at watch...) Any time now.

Great shooting Jake! That is a screaming load right there. I said it on the other post, but take a look at RL19. It looks very good and just may give you a touch more case space.

Saying that 7828 looks good, so I'm betting RL22 will be awesome as well. That rifle should be really when you get it tuned up. With the way it's shooting right now, I bet it won't take long!

Scotty, For this round I'm workling with what I think will be the slower end of powders for it. Next round will be with RL-19, Ramshot Hunter, and I might try to get my hands on some 4831sc.

RL17 might be good as well. Supposed to be very good in the 375 Ruger. I imagine you won't have too much trouble getting what you want Jake. It's a great build.

It sounds pretty close to my .338 Baer (slightly lower capacity) so I suspect the best powders will be from R-22 to H-1000. I shoot 83grs of R-22, 84grs of 7828, and 88grs of H-1000 with 250's. All of them are within 50fps of each other and all shoot tiny little groups.

I shoot RL-17 in my 338 WM with the 225 AB, and have played with it in my 375R with the 270 TSX. It seems to shoot good in both. If I can ever get my hands on some 260 AB seconds, I'll do a bunch more load work with RL-17. But right now Big game is my go to powder for the 260 AB. Gives me MOA groups all day @ 2835 fps.

I'm thinking that case capacity to bullet diamiter wise, it might preform better with some of the medium burners like RL-19, RL-22, H4350, Hunter, and so on. It kind of reminds me of a bigger 30-06. With that said, there isn't a ton of load data available, so I'm going to work it with everything I have.

Scotty, would you run a few QL for me with some of these different powders? 25" barrel. 225 AB @ 3.550"

Thanks, I'll have to look at my ammo box and see what charges I used on my ladder. I'm thinking that they are right around there, but I'm pushing a 225. So I should be pretty close I think.

VN560 looks really good as well Jake. Not sure if you can get your hands on it, but for this big guy, I don't imagine you will shoot a ton of it, and if it works, I would bet an 8lb jug would last awhile after you found a load.

Thanks Scotty. I'll have to see how it compares to what I come up with.

Well I got to spend a little time developing some load data today. All loads were shot with the 225 sst, 215M, and a COAL of 3.500"

I screwed up when I was loading them and didn't want to pull one so I just shot two 78 grain laods. These five shots produced about a 4" group. I didn't get any pressure signs, so I think I can work up another grain or two.

I'm thinking that this powder is to slow for the 225 in this round. The last three shots did produce a nice 3/4" group though.

I'm not sure if I have enough room to try to load up a grain or two or not. It was looking pretty dang full.

I had been doing my barrel break in with some 7828. I didn't get a chance to do much of a ladder test with them as it was to early for the chrony to work when I shot them a few day prior. But I had shot from 79 up to 85 grains. Everything looked good on the cases and bolt lift. I had four rounds with me today that were loaded with 84 gr 7828.

I'm not sure how much more I can go up, but at this point I don't care. my goal for this round was to be able to push a 225 AB @ 3000 fps and shoot half MOA. The above load did about 1 MOA. I'm cleaning everything up good tonight and going out with some 225 AB loaded up with 82, 83, and 84 grains of 7828. We'll see what I come up with. The rifle doesn't have 50 rounds down it yet, and has not been bedded yet (I'm not sure how much bedding will help with the aluminum block that HS uses, but it couldn't hurt) so I'm not expecting anything .5 MOA yet. But 7828 has sure shown some potential to shoot .5 MOA in this gun.

If 7828 doesn't work out very well in the accuracy department, I'll give RL-22 a bit more attention. I might even have to take a look at some H4831. I have never used it for anything and I know alot of guys that like it. I'll have to double check on some burn rate charts, but I think its around RL-22?

Jmad, I would say that you are in the ballpark for max velocity in your .338/.375. My .340 Weatherby Mag ran right at 3080 fps with 88.0 grains of IMR 2878 SSC. That was my most accurate load as well at 200 yards. You are pretty close with less capacity. It looks like a good load to me.

Man that 7828 is some good stuff. I use it in my 280AI and it's a sub .5 MOA gun any day of the week and better when I do my part. How far are you off the lands? My rifle likes a .045" jump.

7828 does look great Jake. Seems like it is meeting your accuracy and speed requirements, so I would see what it does all cleaned up... Looks like it was a short work up buddy. Nice shooting.
