I love to hunt and shoot, but I also love to fish. Like hunting and shooting, it takes time and practice. It also means you can buy factory or make your own. Well today I made my first musky lures. They are double 10s and 8s. I learned a few tricks and now can't wait to get them wet.

Musky fishing prepares me for hours of sitting in a stand. For me it is truly a fish of 10,000 casts.

Excellent! Wait until you begin to build your own rods. All this can be addictive. (y)

Very cool WT. I'd like to learn that skill as well. Making my own rods would be pretty cool.

I will wait on making rods for a while. Right now bucktails are easy and fun to make. The sky is the limit on color, size and style.

I've never been in a location where I could fish for muskie. I have certainly fished for pike and walleye, especially in the Northwest Territory. Do you have favourite lures (colours, styles, etc.)? Should I make it back to Ontario, I'll make it a point to wet a line for muskie.

They look good. Hope you can land a big Tiger Muskie.

To be very honest, I am new to this game. I started because the lake across the road has them and it is a quick drive to the landing so I can fish a few hours here and there. They are like any other game fish and when they want to eat, they eat what is in front of them from what I understand. I know lures and color make a difference but being in the right spot at the right time is the most important. I like to use bucktails because they are easy for me to throw and retrieve. I also like top water lures and baits that glide under the water. (Hellhound or Suick). I have had a few on but have not put one in the boat for a picture then release. There is a picture in the local paper of a lady with a 51" fish from the north end of the lake. Maybe it will attack again and hopefully it is on my line. If I get one, I will post a picture.

I just might need to invite DrMike to come to Wisconsin and go deer hunting and Musky fishing in the same day!

Some of the best times to musky fish is late fall when they are feeding before the ice comes on the lakes. Hard to fish when the rut is in full swing and you enjoy eating venison.

Never caught a Muskie, nor tried for that matter. I was just never in a area where I could.

BUT, I have fished for Kings in the Atlantic and the Gulf. I understand the addiction.

Nothing like landing a 20-30# toofer, on a rig you made yourself!

Plug away and enjoy.

WT,
The solution to that problem is to fill your buck tag very early on opening day. I once had my buck tag filled by 7:15a.m. of opening day. Thus leaving the rest of my vacation for musky fishing!

That would be mighty hard not to accept, Keith! (y) I've fished for walleye and pike in Minnesota (many years ago), but never fished for muskellunge. Five species of Pacific salmon? Check! Steelhead? Check! Rainbow and brook trout? Check! Largemouth and smallmouth? Check! Pike and Walleye? Check! Inconnu? Check! Grayling? Check! Muskie? :( The fish of ten thousand casts? That would be a hoot.

It is fun if you like casting 2-16 ounce baits over and over again. My wife lasts about 30-45 minutes then puts the rod down and grabs a book. After a good evening, a guy can get tired from casting big baits. It is a good time but like deer hunting, you have to stay positive. I try to go the last few hours in the evening as the sun sets and it cools down. I have to keep the mindset that it could happen on the next cast.

Keith must have a better handle on it to offer others. I will offer a boat ride and a good time but no fish guaranteed.

Fishing is a great sport & recently I sold my boat as we had only used it 5 or 6 times in the last 4 years.
Walleye fishing in these parts is great and they are a fine eating fish. I have never fished for Muskies but have been told they are the heavy weight champs of the fishing world. I have caught Northerns over 25lbs and they were a hoot, but I have told big Muskies take it too a whole other level.
Good luck your next time out, as those lures look excellent (y)!

Blessings,
Dan

Enjoy tying my own flies for fishing, particularly for salmon & steelhead. Never tried for muskie...

Best of luck to you!

Guy

Well I had two hits in 4 hours last night on a new lake. One was on the purple bucktail that I made and the other was on a topwater. I did find a flaw in my design but I think I have it fixed.

We may need to talk about a trading post for fishing baits?
Keith

Don't start messing with rodbuilding or making, you'll end up doing this
