I have a very good friend by the name of David. He told me early in the year that he wanted to get a bear this year. I told him I would be up for a hunt. Neither of us had been on a bear hunt before but we see bears all the time while hunting. I have passed on numerous bears over the years for differnt reasons.
David, myself and four other friends decided to hunt a wilderness area in south-west Virginia that we knew held bears. By the time Saturday morning rolled around though we only had David and I leaving the house for the hunt.
We hit the bottom of the mountain at 5:30 a.m. and began the two mile hike up to the top. Once we were there David built a nice little ground blind. The top of the ridge was tore up with bear sign. Bear scat, prints and trees toppled over so that the bears could get to the wild grapes. At around 10:00 a.m. I was about to freeze and left the blind for a still hunt so I could warm up. I saw plent of sign, a deer and several turkeys but no bears.
At 1:45 David left the blind for a still hunt and to warm up. Fifteen minutes later I hear the crack of David's Remington 700 classic in .308win. My cell phone will not work in this area so I headed to him. When I found him he was so excited. He had made a stalk and a shot on a beautiful two year old sow. The 165 grain Gameking entered right behind the right side ribs (quartering away shot) and stopped on the off side shoulder.
The bear only ran 40 yards before piling up. To say we were both walking on cloud 9 is an understatement. Our first bear hunt and David had scored! The fun part started as in Virginia you have to check the whole bear minus the guts. A two mile drag and eight creek crossings made for a long but enjoyable. night. I could not be happier that my good friend David had scored!
