I finally got to take my 300 Weaver out yesterday to fireform some brass and break in the barrel a little. I was gonna use a small charge of unique but I opted to use some old 7828 to help clear off my loading bench a little. (sorry Pop!) I formed 50 pieces over the coarse of the day. (OUCH!!!) After about the 15th round, the gun actually started to settle down and shoot pretty well. Accept for about 5 or 6 rounds, all of them landed within an inch at 100 yds. They were just quick forming loads but I think its a pretty good testament to the potential accuracy of the rifle. Hopefully I'll find out this weekend how it does after some load developement!

That sounds great! Tell me about the .300 Weaver. Is it a belted magnum, what brass is used to fireform the load. What does a finished round look like.

Its bacisally an improved 300rum. I measured the brass after I formed it. The shoulder is 40* and the base of the shoulder measured 10 thousandths bigger than the ultra so its pretty much a straight case wall. I probably didnt gain that much with it. It sounded pretty cool when my gunsmith told me about it but I was kinda ignorant then and anything with more power will always get my attention. He keeps stressin to me to use lighter bullets to better utilize the extra capacity but im gonna start out with a 200gr AB and see what happens.

200gr AB and slow powders should be a fine place to start with that rifle. There are not many critters on this earth that could stand in front of it for long.

OK, I've had 200gr ABs on order form both of the gun shops in town for a week and neither of them produced. I have some 180s that I'm gonna try now. Im shooting my gun tomorrow come hell or high water. Does anyone know where a good starting charge of retumbo would be?

As for loads, I would "think" just under 300 RUM max loads would be your starting point but don't quote me on this. I would consult with your gunsmith.

You like the sound of it?! Wow, according to people on other web sites its a complete waist of money and a worthless p.o.s. It started life as a 700 bdl. I had the action squared and blueprinted. The barrel is a Lilja #5 contour, 3 groove, 1-11 twist. For now, I just had him pillar bed the action and glass bed the rest of the stock. It still pretty much looks like a factory bdl with a little heavier barrel and a much better blueing job. He keeps pushing me to shoot 165 tsx,s over h-1000. I would just feel a lot more comfortable with at least a 180 on elk. Nosler doesn't list 180 loads with retumbo on their web site. Thats why I asked about a good starting point.

Those minor changes will bring out the beast! The 338 O'Brien is a 338-300 RUM AI and shoots a 250 gr PT at 3250 fps from a 26" barrel.
Post a picture of your rifle and a 300 Weaver next to a 300 RUM if you can.
A lot of us here would love to see it.
I bet she will be a shooter. :grin:

USually you use bigger cases for there extra capacity to push bigger bullets faster. Thats utilizing case capacity...Speed and smaller bullets only get you so far...
I would like to see pics of the rifle and loaded cartridge to if you can. I had a standard 300 RUM for a couple years and loved it, so much I shot the barrel out! I mainly shot 200g AB's at 3200fps or 210g VLD's at 3000fps. Hammered everything it hit. You wont be dissappointed with the performance of the 200g AB.

If I can get my hands on a digital camera I will post some pictures a.s.a.p. Sorry guys, I'm a little behind the times. Anyway, I plan on shootin the 200s soon as they come in. I shot them when the rifle was in standard RUM form and I loved them. I've been dyin to shoot it so I hijacked some of my dads 180s. I figure it will at least give me an idea of how much more powder I can use. I'm goin shootin in the mornin so I'll post the results some time tomorrow afternoon. I'm gonna try the ladder method. I'm loaded up to 103.6gr of retumbo. There's more room as I have not crushed powder yet. I'm figurin on bringin back some live rounds due to pressure before I reach the max but we'll see!

I would start with the 300 RUM minimum loads, and work up about 5% or so above the listed max, chronograph, and keep my bulletpuller handy. I would do this for a wide variety of bullet weights. This will give you a good baseline to compare your rifle with the 300 RUM.
180Gr Accubonds out of that cannon will clobber an elk. It's plenty of gun and bullet for NA. At some point, I would probably try the 165 TSX, and H1000 is rumored to be one of the best powders in the 300 RUM. In general, with that big case, I'd stick to the slower powders, Retumbo, RL-25, big boy, 50 BMG ext for cannister powders, but I would quickly move to the much cheaper surpluss powders. Lets face it, at 100gr a trigger pull, powder gets really expensive, really fast.
As far as it being a "waste of time and money", tell that to all the guy's on this sight that like their 280 AI's. :grin:
