A few weeks ago I posted about how I worked on an old Rem 740 that a young man was taking on his first elk hunt. We spent an afternoon at the range with him using that rifle but he couldn't shoot it well. It has an awful trigger and tends to shoot lower with every subsequent shot. When I shot it the best I could do was a 4"group. I wasn't feeling very good about him and his chances with that rifle but I'm not very comfortable loaning firearms out due to some previous incidents. Then I thought about what if he'd been my son or even myself 30+ years ago. It was an easy decision after that. I pulled out my 325WSM that's been nicknamed "killer" for the 13 animals it's taken in the last 6 years and shot a .75" group. Then I turned to this young man and said "I think you better take this one hunting". He proceeded to shoot several good groups and I literally could see his confidence growing by the minute. I received these photos the other day and a promise of summer sausage in a few weeks.

I hope I get the sausage made with the elk and not the coyote.

I've heard people say coyote isn't all that bad. Guess I've never been that hungry to verify their assessment. However, elk sausage is quite another story. Good move, Scott. I simply don't lend rifles. However, I'm lending one this year to a first-time hunter. I hope he does as well as the young man you helped. God bless you for your generosity (and I believe He has already blessed you).

Excellent all the way around. Congrats to the young guy on his elk.

Cool beans mate!
Your generosity will not go unrewarded I believe.
Good people, doing good deeds, attract good things.

Scott what a great act on your part (y)! I would think that young fellow has just made a few giant steps forward because you took the time to pay some attention to him. Thank you for starting a young lad in sport of hunting.
Also congratulate the young Lad on a fine Elk :).
PS. I hope that you enjoy the sausage.

Blessings,
Dan

Well done! I feel the same way about loaning out a rifle. However the memories he made that you are a part of are priceless. Korny as it sounds. CL

Good of you to lend him a decent rifle .. Hunt he will always remember . And sausage is all right , but I'd ask for a couple calf elk steaks myself. Mmmm tender vittles hanging there.

Way to go Scott. I've got a couple rifles I'd loan out to the right hunters and your 325 has been a beast for you so it sounds like you've made another Hunter for us. Heck, maybe he will find himself a 325. Seems like they are working very well.

Cue Gene.   Just kidding.

Scott that is an amazing act of kindness that will not be forgotten any time soon by that young man. it's nice to see that kind of thought and class is still alive and well. (y)

Way to go.

He will remember that for the rest of his life too.

Funny thing is most of those 740/742's that I have been around were at least a 2.5" gun at 100 yards even with factory loads. I wonder if it may be his scope?

Doubtless you have instilled in him a desire for a bolt-action rifle now :)

So good for you. Another reason for synthetic stocks! The first rifle I loaned out was dropped in a creek. It still bears the scars on the once nice wood stock, but the guy who dropped it is still my best friend.

Congratulations

That's awesome! If you go on YouTube and search Steve Rinella cooking a coyote, it was entertaining to say the least! the only way I'd cook one up if it meant the difference between eating or starving.

I saw that vid. Doesn't particularly entice me, though he contended that it wasn't too bad. 'Course, what did we expect he would say?
