First real day with GBL

I put 20 rounds thru my very new GBL yesterday, a learning experience. I have a mixture of Win HP 300's and some Bufflo Bore 350's (both thanks to Woodycreek)and 350 hard cast reloads of mine. I was not testing accuracy but was wanting to become familar with the rifles, POA (it has peep sights) and see whether I can still hit with open sights.
The first lesson I learned was thumb position. When I fired the first shot my thumb hit me in the face, primarily my cold nose. I am thinking that "hurt" so I adjusted my grip and propmptely hit my self in the face a couple of more times. (my nose is still sore). Apparently I am a slow learner. After that lesson I begain learning to load the rifle. As my only lever rifle "ever" the side gate loading creates a complexity far beyond anything I have ever experienced in a rifle. It was kind of like single feeding a bolt rifle. After 20 rounds I pinched my thumb, (so now my thumb and nose is sore) made the tip sore ( it was cold) and managed to somewhat figure out the angles and pressure required for loading. Thankfully the trigger worked the same way as my bolt rifles. As far as the actual shooting went, it was OK. I put 6 jugs along an old road running thru our place then walked back about 80 yards and started relearning how a peep sight works. I shot the first jug (the closest one) first and after 3 shots figured out the hold. The farthest jug went with the first shot, as I moved a little forward I figured out the sight picture and then quite hitting the ground in front of the jugs. Bullet performance was amazing. The hard casts left a nice clean 45 cal hole in and out of the jugs. The Win 300 HP's made the jugs mostly fragment and explode. The Bufflo bore were a SP and while not as explosive as the HP but did fragment the jugs. All and all a great time and I learned a lot. I will reload so more hard cast and try them again on a target in the near future. I also think I will order some more 350 SP. A nice afternoon in the wind.

Bill,

The learning curve is a bit steep and I laughed as I read. The laughter was because of remembering my own learning curve. They are addictive, but they do have a tendency to bite if we are unwary. Congratulations on acquiring a great rifle.

Good stuff Bill  I'm laughing with you buddy. At least you don't have any scars from shooting it like someone else we know  I will call you in a few to see how the nose and thumb are doing

It was fun and I really enjoyed it. Especially the newness of the experience. Appreciate the comments.

Let me save you one potentially painful lesson should you ever decide to scope it - even if just testing loads...

Carefully consider both the scope and the mount - so as to avoid eyebrow kiss from the scope. I think the hardest kicking stuff I shoved down my 1895 Marlin were 425 gr Piledriver Junior cast bullets from Beartooth, at 1925 - 1950 fps... Pretty brutal in the relatively light Marlin.

The scope never even brushed my forehead. This is because I set it up with the Leupold mount, which puts the scope pretty far forward, AND because I used a fixed power scope. Using a fixed power Leupold gains about an inch in eyebrow clearance simply because of the construction of the scope.

I've seen other guys bash themselves rather nastily - including drawing blood. Depends in part on your body type, how you're built and how you shoulder the gun. Doggone Marlins tend to be real short for me, and I naturally crawl the stock a bit. The Leupold mount and fixed power 2.5x Ultralight scope worked great for me during the nine years I had it on a pair of .45/70 Marlins.

Regards, Guy

Bill,

Congratulations on the new GBL.
Those 1895's are shooters and sure are a lot of fun.

guy

I much appreciate the info. The rifle came with an XS rail and I picked up a well used 4 power Leupy. I am not long armed or big but am a stock crawler. None of my scopes come back past the rear action mount, so they are mounted pretty far forward. I will probably not mount it for a while, I like the idea of the peep. It does point well and is quick at close range, I doubt it will be seriously hunted for a couple of years. I need a west side elk tag which is a least three years away. I am betting that most here (including me has been blessed by a scope at least once), in my case its been at least three times.

Bill,

That is going to be a nice set up with the 4x Leupold. That is what I mounted when I set up my 1895 Guide. A couple years later, I went with the VX-3 1.75-6x32mm.
Man, that scope is bright and IMHO, is the perfect power magnification raqnge for the 45-70.

Man, I am laughing pretty hard right now, cause it took some trial and error to get mine right and I still don't have the scope on the rifle I really want. I did put that scope very far forward, cause getting smacked in the forehead just wasn't fun at all..

I haven't zeroed this 45-70 with the peeps just yet, but I am about to yank the current scope on the Guide Rifle, and put it on my 35 Rem. It'll leave the 45-70 with the sights for me to mess around with.

Sounds like you have some bullets worked out. Pretty hard to go wrong with cast lead bullets or 350 Hornady FN's. The Hornady 350's were pretty accurate and don't need to be pushed very hard to work really well. It is a dream to smack elk with the 45-70. Maybe we can smack one of them jungle elk together Bill.. Brian can carry our rifles for us or maybe let us use the cart he moves his 300RUM around on!

We could get him a game cart with the bycycle tire, then when we killed something he could haul our gear out to the rig. Then we could wait there while he went back for the meat. If it was going to take more than one trip we could wait in camp. !!! Think he will like that idea? It really appeals to me. !!!

JD thats a very nice looking outfit, a really nice picture.

I think if I put my scope back that far it would come out behind my ear.

What a perfect woods rig.

Thanks fellas.

Bill, there is a lot of eye releif with this scope and I haven't been it yet.

Kurt, what in the world are you waiting for........an invetation??? :p
You are invited to join the Marlin 1895 Big Bore 45-70 club.
Hope to see you soon.

I had a 2.5-8x32mm scope on my Marlin 1895. I got bitten several times for stock crawling by the red plastic lever on the Butler Creek scope cap. The end of the lever points straight at the nose when the cap is open. The lever hitting a cold nose leaves a little triangular shaped divit in the nose. So beware and move the scope forward.

Now that, is the kind of detailed information that comes only from the voice of experience!

Guy, if you saw the way my 45-70 molested me, well, I am pretty sure you would have laughed for a 1/2 hour.... Lets just say, whenever I look at JD's set up, I cringe a little!
