first try with 200 accubond ( update)

i started reloading 1 year ago for my 300 ultra
i started with 168 gr barnes ttsx and got 3150 fps and consistent
.500" accuracy.
this week i received 200 accubonds and try them with retumbo
94 gr. i got 3047 fps average and a .650" 3 shot group.
95 gr. i got 3086 fps ave. and a 1.25" group (2 shot touching and the 3rd. to the right, i think i might have pulled this one)

i must say that i'm impressed by the performance of this load when i put the info on a ballistic calculator. it offers flatter trajectory than the 168 gr.
better wind drift and so much more energy way out there.
i cant wait to try this on a bear this spring.

for you guys that use the 200 AccuBond in 300 rum. what coal do you use?
i tried 94 gr. @ 3.600" and got that 0.650" group.
then tried 94 gr. @ 3.650" and got 1.6" group.

of course i only tried 3 - 3 shot group.
i will try more soon. but it looks like i'll be able to make it shoot great for a hunting rifle.

Since you got a good group with 94gn with a 3.60" COL, try seating the bullet out from there in .010" increments. If find a another good group, you can try .005" seating depth changes. My 300RUM w/200ABs liked a COL of 3.635" and 95gn of Retumbo.

In fact, after looking at my load info, all of my RUMs like a COL around 3.62" to 3.64"

so i'll start with 94 gr. And roll 5 each starting at 3.600"
in 0.010" increment to 3.640" and see how it turns out.

Pop i may try rl25 as Still have a third of a pound
but m'y barrel is hard to clean with this powder
compared to factory Stuff . Have you noticed
something Like that?

I can't get mine anywhere close to the lands without turning into a single shot. I believe most of the RUM's use Max magazine length ? I haven't shot mine in over a year now, but will check length.

I loaded to max magazine length in my 700 LSS which was like 3.660" if memory serves me correct.

You need to keep the OAL the same when working up loads or else you'll have inadequate data.

You could have pulled that shot with the 95g load or it might not like that OAL. Keep things constant and only cahnge 1 thing at a time when your working up loads. It'll save you a lot of headache.

I used A LOT of H1000 in my 300 RUM. It loved it so I saw no reason to change. 92-94g gave me 3100-3200fps and 1/2 MOA.

The system I have used to pretty good results is to figure the velocity you want and can expect and load to that with the maximum fill rate of the cartrige. It seems the best loads are either compressed or close to it Then vary the OAL to the best. Then vary the velocity to the most accurate then vary the OAL again.
It takes a lot of massaging to get to what works the best.
And were not even talking about primers and cases-neck trimming

so i went back to the range to try and improve this load but it was a lot worst.
the first 2 targets are the ones from the other day.
i shot a 0.658 group with 94 gr.retumbo and a coal of 3.600
i also tried a coal of 3.650 as this shot the best with the TTSX 168.
that group was worst at 1.50"
so this morning i tried again.
i kept 94 gr. of retumbo for a charge and played with OAL.
the first group i made i still used 3.600 but with WLRM primers.
group was .937"
second group i kept 3.600 and CCI250 that gave me .658" the other day and used the 1st circle on my BDC reticle just to see how it would group compared to a crosshair. group was 1.19"
then i tried a group at 3.615" that was 1.82"
and finally a last group at 3.630" that was 2.25" .

now is it possible that such small changes in COAL make that much difference in group size?
you can see in the pics that group keep the same pattern but enlarging when i lenghten COAL.
can i go shorter than 3.600" with a 200 AccuBond in 300 rum? like 3.585"
the last 2 groups were shot 22 to 27 since i cleaned the barrel. is it possible that it's already fouled? i don't see groups beginning to open before 45 shots with the barnes TTSX.
velocity for the 12 shots were between 3052 and 3079. ave.3060 fps.

what would you do next?
should i try cleaning the barrel and a shorter coal (if possible to go below 3.600")
try a 10 shot group at 3.600?

that load is already not bad with 1 group at .658 and 1 at .937.
it's just that i was spoiled with the 168 ttsx shooting something like 15 - 3 shot groups between 0.37 and 0.82.
and 1-10 shot group where 7 of those were in .532" and the other 3 enlarged it to 1.36"

I am new guy but am despertly trying to understand what is the problem?????? You have a load with 200 gr. bullets, going well over 3,000fps that is shooting under 1 inch. I would have quit 2 weeks ago, I assume that you are hunting big game, if so most animals that you shoot will probably not realize that your groups are way out there at .600 or so!!!! The 168 TTSX are probably too light skinned for big game at close range. The 200's will be great. Enjoy your great accuracy and keep shooting. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i wrote this just because i was wondering if .030" in coal could
turn a 1" load into a 2.5". (and it's fun to try and turn a 1" load into 1/2")
and i gave the example that it was a lot more consistent and easy with the ttsx.

for the penetration of the 168 ttsx,( or the 168 e tip) i think it would penetrate as muchas the 200 AccuBond. maybe even more especially at close range. but wound channel seems smaller.
but of course any lead core 165 grainer, will not match the 200 grainer
for penetration.

It's really a reloader shooter thing. I'm always looking for a little bit more velocity and accuracy out of my loads. Makes it fun and interesting for me.

i gave the 200 AccuBond another try, it's such a good bullet B.C. wise that i really wanted it to work.
last time i had hard bolt lift and ejector marks on a few shell. and this week i read something about pressure signs load being less accurate. so i droped
from 94 to 92 gr. retumbo and voila...
.712" 5 shot group. velocity was 2982,3003,3009,2989,2989.
first shot from a cold bore is in there. i'm pretty excited with this.
it should be a load to thump moose from very far away. :twisted:

with your help i started reloading and i'm glad i did
i now have 2 sub moa loads with excellent bullet (AccuBond and ttsx)
and they cost 60% less then factory ammo that shot 400% larger groups. 8)
