Back in 2003 I flew from Orlando to Albuquerque and was required by South West Airlines to place my ammunition in a separate check-in bag. Have things changed or does the same requirement have to be met.

It's been awhile since I've flown but ammunition must be in a separate checked bag than firearms. I have a Pelican 1750 double gun case and it's held up well with airline travel.

I didn’t have much trouble flying from PDX or SeaTac to Anchorage every year. Anchorage back was easier than going up, probably do to familiarity with the process. I have run into ammo in separate bag or in the gun box several times. It just kinda depends on the agent I think. It was actually more challenging getting my dogs checked in than getting guns and ammo checked in.
Make sure the gun box and the bag with the ammunition gets a “Must Fly” sticker on it. When I was guiding up there I would put a pistol in a locked box in my checked bag so they had to put a must fly sticker on it.

Typically it just goes in a checked back and in an original Ammunition carrier-the box it came in or a plastic ammo holder that is taped shut.
But each airline does have their own rules and the girl at the check in counter may not be familiar with them! Always check ahead of time and I would print the rules off and keep them with the firearm in case you need to help her out. Always declare firearms before flying. . .

I concur with Don that you take a handgun with you, if legal, so your suitcase gets a “Must Fly” sticker.
