I have two choices, both CZ rifles:

CZ 455 in 22LR.

CZ 527 in 223 Rem.

Is there more of a reason to choose one over the other? I intend to use it solely for practicing marksmanship, i.e. the shooting positions and such. Either will wear a 4X fixed power scope.

I have a lot of time shooting 5.56 rounds out to 500 meters in varying wind thanks to the Corps, hence why I am considering it

223 for sure.

Longer distance, never a problem with finding ammo.

Also you will be surprised what you can do with a 35 gr Hornet bullet and some unique at 1500-2000 fps ro reproduce 22 rounds.

Normally I'd recommend the .22, but I can't promise that ammo will be inexpensive or in good supply anytime soon.

I have this one and it is a great trainer.Dewey

+1. Just got one of these earlier this month, and it drew its first blood yesterday. :)

I just got a Savage Mark II. Been shoting it a lot. I was pleasently surprised. Its shoots well. Good thing I had a stash of .22lrs.

I have owned both, a 452 varmint, and a 527 synthetic in .223. both well made and accurate. I think they still twist the .223 at 1-9", this will keep you at the 69 g sierra matchking level with the .223 . barrel life? not sure exactly,I would assume several thousand with the heavies. I believe that shooting a .22lr is probably the best practice there is, I have an anschutz 54 national match that i practice with alot both indoor small bore and outside steel distance targets. I base the target size and distance in relation to time of flight of a 308 win with a. 168 bthp, meaning if it takes the .308 .5 seconds to reach a target i find where the .22 time of flight matches and put the target there. you can mimic a long range course with alot less real estate. either way i think ypu will be happy with whatever you endup with.

I have a CZ 527, .204 Ruger which is a great little, very accurate, CF varmit rifle. If I could find somebody in Oregon, Idaho or Washington to do a FTF trade with for a CZ 455 in equal (NRA Excellent) condition, I would do it! I do not varmit hunt any more but I do shoot rimfire for cleanup of rats etc. around the yard. Let me know if anyone is interested?

Fotis and Guy,

Thoughts on these two?

What is the expected barrel life on a 223?

I too have the 527 in .204 Ruger, and couldn't be happier with it. Wonderful rifle. Accurate. Easy to shoot. Very handy. Kind of cool with that mini-mauser controlled feed... On a .204! Haven't met a 527 that I didn't like. There's a lot of value built into those rifles.

A .223... They're supposed to wear out somewhat quickly, but a buddy of mine WON the Idaho State sniper competition 100 yard/group event with a Rem 700 .223 that we know had at least 7,000 rounds through the barrel!

That's a lot of shooting and it still produced a one-hole group at 100 yards. We were all impressed, especially those of us who knew it was a factory rifle with a ton of shooting behind it.

I am going to go with a 22 LR or 17HMR in a CZ...I have plans for something else in a centerfire ;) Plus, I shoot a ton of rounds in 5.56 for free thanks to the Corps and thats training in itself
