Found my limit

Thanks all for the great suggestions, I ordered a Past Recoil Shield this am. I felt this was the best option for a variety of reasons.
My .308 weighs 10+lbs, so carrying it would not be fun. My 7 mm has a HS-Precision stock which has the recoil pad glued to the stock so I would have to had to cut it off, and I was not prepared to take that on at this late date. I will be able to give an evaluation the shield late next week. Thanks all :grin: :grin:

The 7mm Rem Mag will get r done. The Past recoil shield will do a good job. My girl friend uses one for her 280AI at the range and it really helps. Maybe you will be able to shoot the 300 Win Mag to verify your zero and then take her to the dance.

The recoil "shield" arrived late yesterday, so this morning between rain showers I had a chance to test it. It made shooting a three shot group with the 7 mm mag very manageable. It fits well and is not bulky under my normal shooting jacket. Three shots at 300 yards, load was 71 gr. h-1000, RP cases, CCI mag primers and a 162 gr Hornady BTSP, loaded at 3.285 AOL. Shooting prone off the ground and with the bipod, group size was 1.796. Impact point was Still a little low but straight in line. I will adjust for 300 yard zero then go it to 425 and 600 to build my range card. I am very happy with the results in just 6 rounds of shooting this fall. This should do fine for elk.

The problem with finding your limit is that you're seldom looking for the limit. Glad that the PAST Shield is working, Bill. I use one when I have a number of "kickers" to test. That is wisdom; and after this many years I would hope I had a bit to apply to my shooting.

Bill, we're going to be quite a pair up on your elk mountain... Both old veterans. Both recovering from surgery and other issues.

What do you say we just call for fire, and take our bull with mortars?

I'm doing okay with the .25-06, but haven't been out with the .30-06 yet... Soon... There's also a .300 WSM that's ready to go - but... I dunno... It's a little heavy for hiking the elk ridges...

I have yet to find any rifle that's not heavy when hiking the ridges. This 7 is not one of them either.

Sorry to hear of your injury. I was there some years back, with a crushed spinal disk. Afraid surgery was the only route.

Anyway, after 2 weeks of post-op Wife, Mom, and MIL's excessive henning over me, I picked up the phone and called my best man to come rescue me to the deer camp. Needless to say they were pissed !

I too knew that I wasn't going to be anywhere close to being able to popping a Mag. Gave my 308 carbine a shot. NOPE!!!!! No NO NO !!

The 35 Rem came next, and I was OK with that. So off we went.

When we finally made the 2 hr drive in 4, because Bill had to keep off the road to let me straighten out the crunch of my back, I found one of my Corps buddies in camp as well. George said " give this one a shot". A Rem 770 mountain rifle, 7mm/08, with a Limb Saver pad on it. I took a shot and it was OH YEAH.

2 shots, 2 deer, 2 minutes...........and I've been a 7mm08? Limb Saver fan ever since.

Have you ever considered using a lead sled? I use a dual frame lead sled verifying different loads
for my 300 RUM that is ported. It greatly reduces recoil substantially, eliminates pounding on the shoulder too.

I find the POI is the same after I change over to the bench rest and rear bag. I have proved this method with my 30-06 and 35 Whelen too.

However, I did a change the recoil pad on the 300 RUM a few years ago and it did reduce the felt recoil.

With the past pad I am very comfortable with the rifle, I had some wind yesterday and was not able to group well. Today we had 3 to 5 mph right up my back and a cool morning. I managed to put my 3 shots into 2.891 group, at 425 yards. In addition 14 clicks of elevation put them in at dead center. I am very pleased, I have to take a couple of shooting days off and then try and finish out the range card verification. All seems to be going very well.
