I agree Mike, I have not owned a VX7 Leupold or Vortex PST but have held good things about the Leupold from many people. The Vortex is pretty new yet. I have a cheaper Vortex 6x40 Crossfire on a .22 LR and it seems pretty good for the cost. I have not tested it though.

I was actually a little surprised at how badly my 4.5-14 Conquest looked today. The Minox Z3 on the '06 was far and away the best scope I had with me. I'll make a go at focusing the Zeiss next time out, but I was pretty bummed.

I might start looking at a Swaro Z3 3-10x42 next.

Charlie - thanks for taking the time to give us that intel. It seems the quality of the scope gets more important as my eyes age :roll: .

I put a 2-7 X32 Vortex on the .243 I recently bought and it seems pretty good for bench shooting so far. I haven't had it out in hunting conditions yet.

The item that is so important about this info is...when do you see most of the critters moving that we hunt? It is dawn and dusk.

That is true, plus with antler points regulations or restrictions in so many states now, I really appreciate being able to count points in the oak brush, at dusk or dawn and at 300 yards out sometimes.

Age enters into the equation also. I am not nearly as eagle-eyed as I was even ten years ago. After two cataract surgeries and being so far-sighted, a good clear scope or binoculars really helps open things up for seeing.

BK I can relate...four of my current five centerfire rifles are 30 caliber...to wit a 300 Savage, a 308 WCF, a 30-06 Springfield, and a 300 WSM. Two Savage 99's and two Winchester 70's.

But that's okay, I find there is something comforting in a 30 caliber rifle, it just works, every time. I shoot them well if not the best on average and know that whatever they hit dies quick. No b.s. or tracking for days, down right there period!

So don't be too hard on yourself, we all have our preferences... :wink:

Interestingly enough, my brother-in-law has the exact same rifle as your 300 RUM. We had to put a decelerator on it to be able to shoot it well. And he even ended up replacing the stock altogether.

I think if Winchester chambered their Sporters and EW's in the 300RUM, they would really be on to something. Why would I want a 300RUM? It is way more fun to shoot yours and I don't have to reload them! Scotty

Same here Mike. I am too wrapped up around the WSM's at the moment. Although, if I saw this rifle locally, it may have been tough for me to not put a deposit on it. I am pretty sure I would know someone that would like one! Scotty

You know I said the same thing when my wife bought her 4th sewing machine. I am "still" way ahead. But having that disease spread throughout the household I was thinking it might be airborn rather than genetic? Or is it generic ???

Very Nice Rifles Kurt- I really don't have much use for a 300 RUM though because it is pretty much the brink of too much recoil for me. It is quite uncomfortable off the bench. I know I have shot 375 H+H Mags that kick less than 300 RUMs. But I hope that you enjoy it, its a solid load thats for sure.

I think that in the 30 cal department that the 300 WSM or Win Mags are as much magnum as I will ever need. Though I wouldn't mind getting a 300 H+H like that one of yours buddy, love it!


Have you shot it yet? How does it group? Whats the recoil like?
