Getting Ready for Elk Season

Scotty, I still have one of those slings that I got when I was in the Army. Still works!

Yeah, I can see them not wearing out too awfully fast Charlie..

Guy, I think the Turner and I will get along just fine. I really enjoyed working with it and I still sorta messing with the length to work with my rifles. Next time out, I will put it on the Newton I believe to get some face time with the big gun.

I will also start hammering out some rounds from sitting as well. Standing, well, I will work on that, but that is my last resort if kneeling doesn't work out.

I am "always" ready for elk season.

...growing up, my family spent 3 mos. out of the year hunting, 9 mos. "getting ready", now I hardly even get "unpacked" between elk seasons...

Took Brandon and Dylann out yesterday to do some more shooting. Brandon is really shaping up pretty well with his 7mm. I have two loads for his rifle, both use the same powder charge (RL17), Norma case, CCIBR2 primer, but I use the 150 BT for his practice load and the 150 PT for his hunting load. Both shoot very similarly out at 200 so far, they run within 20FPS of one another, so worst case, it'll take a little zeroing tweak to make sure all is good come November.

We have switched to paper plates on the target board now. Seems to work better for him and his groups don't seem to suffer too much, at least that I can tell.

His first three were the larger triangle at 11 O'Clock. His next group was the smaller triangle of 3 inside that group. I moved him 4 clicks left and he smacked the first one center of the plate, he pulled the 2nd off to the right and planted the 3rd shot back in the center. I was very happy with his shooting.

That was all at 200 yards prone.

We also shot from the open leg sitting with the sling and he did pretty well with that as well. He noticed right away it was a much tougher position though.

Dylann wanted in on the action as well with her 22 so we got her shooting. She is a riot on the range, that is for sure!

Great to see your children enjoying themselves and preparing for a good season, Scotty. Go get 'em, Brandon!

Nice shooting by both of your kids Scotty! Very well done and time spent like that is priceless!! :!:

I can tell from the picture he sure takes after dad. I noticed the size of his feet. Man if he fills into those things like a puppy he's going to be a big kid!

I think Dylann and Wyoming Huntress should put on a shooting clinic. I know a few people that could use a good shooting coach.

HA! I can't wait till Dylann starts shooting more of the long guns. For now, she can't get enough of the danged 22.. She'd sit there and shoot all day.

I think that is pretty neat to see the young lady enjoy herself so thoroughly.

Sure looks like Brandon will be ready when it comes Wapati time and I just hope the unit you will be hunting has not burned down as we have fires a blazing all over the NW area but it seems to bounce back but takes a year or so,once a place has been burnt. Dylann sure is proud of that lower LH grouping and I know you are tickled pink they love to shoot as much as they do! You gotta be smiles from ear to ear as that is some great stuff burning powder with the Family!

Before I go on a out of state hunt the majority of my shooting is from offhand, sitting and prone, all with a sling.
I don't know the name of the sling I use but it's made by Hunter. All leather, 1" wide, it is quickly adjustable by sliding it using rings and a loop. Not quite as effective as around the bicep but it steadies you up pretty good wrapped around the arm and elbow. The best thing is it only takes a second to go from shoulder to shooting position. Especially if carried at the right length to start with.
Been using one of these for over 30 years and it really helps my field shooting.
Here's a photo with the sling on the table. It's also my newest one.

Agree. That's how I do my practice sessions, getting good with the rifle from field type positions. Mostly I practice standing, because it's the toughest to do well, and I need more practice.

I like sitting the best, have likely shot most of my game animals from a hastily assumed sitting position.

Prone I like because I'm good at it, and almost never make a bad shot from prone. However, it's the least likely to be used in the field, because it's so low I often find grass, brush, logs or rocks in the line of sight...

I was able to get out last Sunday and do a little shooting with the 35 Newton. Wanted to refine my 200 yard zero, I was looking for about 2.5" high at 200 in order to give me a 260 yard zero, which is 3" high at 100.

I did all of my shooting, off the ground, prone, wrapped up in the Turner's Sling. Awesome shooting platform. Can't wait to take it out further.

First 3 shots were just under the bull. Added 5 clicks of elevation and shot the next 5 (pair then a trio). I shanked one shot, but overall, I am feeling very good with that rifle.

I also ran one shot over the chrono, just to verify my load and it was 2811FPS. Pretty happy with it, should be one awesome elk killer.
