Got me a new shooter

I missed a deer last season with my 629 Mountain Gun and I could never manage to get straightened back out with it. My shooting just sucked actually. I walked into a local store today and there was a Ruger SBH 4 5/8", so we made a trade. I like Ruger guns but I have had a couple that you could not hit a barn standing inside of it. Loading the same loads that the S&W shot good were a disaster in the SBH, so I was worried. With some tweeking I managed to find a couple loads that the Ruger shoots great, overall better than the 629 shot. My 250gr Keith SWC+10.0grs of Unique hit almost the same POI as my 245gr Bayou Bullet SWC+5.0grs of Bullseye, hunting load and a practice load. I have a box of 310gr WFCGC left that I bet will be some kind of awesomeness from the SBH, the S&W did not approve of them. The great thing is I have fired over 100 rounds of cast and leading is basically zero, just a sliver or two. The bayou bullets are the stuff for plinkers, no lube to get messy and they are pretty cheap.

Great looking handgun. Thanks for sharing both the pictures and the story. That is good stuff.

Heath,

Nice! She is a beauty for sure, congratulations.

I have done the poor boy trigger job on it for now, I am going to tear into the sear and trigger this weekend. I ground down the pawel so the cylinder can free spin with the loading gate open, I don't know why they don't come this way from the factory!

Thanks

Here are the 3 slugs I am running from the gun so far. Left to right, 245gr SWC - Bayou Bullets with 5.0grs of Bullseye, 250gr Keith SWC - Mount Baldy with 10.0grs of Unique and the 310gr WFNGC - Oregon Trail. I have not worked with the 310 from the SBH yet, but I figure it will shoot great as the gun shows a preferance for .430+" boolits. I figure 2400 or Unique with it.

A police officer friend sold me that same 44mag, just with regular rosewood grips, one of the better deals I have gotten, pistol +3 boxes of ammo and a hunter holster for $150. I could not pass it up. I hardly ever shoot it,( no I wont sale it for that price) I have more fun with the 45 colt ruger BH

Heath, that is an awesome pistol, I have the same one with the 7.5" barrel and it is an excellent shooter for me. I am not a pistol expert by any stretch, but it shoots very tight for me while shooting off the bench. I really like the Ruger 6 guns. I carry it all the time and kinda practice with it while waiting for barrels to cool while at the range. That 310gr bullet should be a heckuva handful. I am kinda stuck on 23.5gr of H110 and 240gr Noslers! Scotty

Heath,

That Oregon Trail 310gr WFNGC should be a sledge hammer for your 44 Mag.

I had a box of 240 JSP Nosler's but got ride of them for some reason. I think the 310's should be an awesome bullet that I won't have to lean on real hard to get pass throughs on the critters around here.

$150 for a SBH is a steal, send that guy my way!

I had a chance to get a great looking older SBH at a decent deal a few months back but passed. I would like to have a longer barreled revolver, probably a SBH Hunter is on the menu.

I had a hard time deciding between the pistol you have, the one I got and the Hunter model. I kinda just came down to the pistol is a short range weapon for me, and I won't mount a scope on it, and I figured the 7.5 would get about as much out of the 44 as I wanted. I do really like yours alot though. Looks like an excellent packing pistol, very handy and alot of firepower. I did swap over to Hogue grips, only cause the Rosewoods are a might slippery with wet paws! Scotty

You like the Hogue's pretty good? I would like to keep wood grips on mine, but I have pretty good sized mitts and while the gun shoots really good I am having a hard time getting used to my pinkie not even being close to being on the gun.

I got the gun to pack hence the short barrel. I do a lot of ginseng digging and I like having a little extra punch if need be. I figure 50yds is MY limit so I thought a shortie was the way to fly. My neighbr has the 10.5" SBH, I told him the other day I was going to get a rubber stopper and put over his barrel so it could double as a cane. The 4.6" to 7.5" does not seem that bad, 7.5" to 10.5" barrel seems like a mile.

I really don't need a hunter as I have a Contender 30/30 that is just insanely accurate. It really makes me look like I know what I am doing when I shoot it. I have actually outshot quite a few deer rifles around here off the bench with the Super 14, talk about people being pissed. LOL!

Heath, the Hogues are pretty awesome in my book. They are very "grippy" and I have large hands, so it lets me put all my paws on the pistol the way I am used to. With the wood grips I was getting bit some with the squared of trigger guard. Overall, I would do it again in a heartbeat. They were 20.00 well spent for me. I really like to shoot it now. Scotty

Very nice. Can I have it? reflex264

LOL, thanks for the offer. :) I am going to keep this one for awhile.

I have my eye on a .44 Special Taurus right now. I have the .44 disease, I am afraid it will continue into .45, .475 etc.
