After all the urging from Dave and all the rest of you I got it. The 280 Rem in a Wby ultra light. I got it this morning for $950 which I figured was OK because it has a muzzle break.
I'm treading on new ground here using a rifle under 30 cal and not even Magnum written on it anywhere but the picture of David with the elk convinced me it's all right.
Thank you all for the help and advice. and I think I will go with 140 gr. bullets, probably Accubonds since "They Rock". Here's the pictures (I hope). Ok there's no pictures untill I get the rifle. I can't get it to upload . I'm pumped. I already ordered the dies yesterday so now all I need is brass and some bullets. Yipeee

Congrats Greg...that is the caliber that made me start reloading 30 + years ago. Seeing all the guys that are using them now makes me want another one, but there are too many in the safe already that need some serious hunting time.

Greg -
Congrats on the new addition - reading your other post you won't be disappointed.

I have one of the early M-700 Stainless Synthetic Mtn Rifles. Haven't shot too many
AB's out of it, but it likes both the 140 / 150gr B-tips. Don't forget the 140gr B-tip has
the little "extra" construction in it. I've used them both for mulies & elk with not much of an issue.
I don't even second guess myself most of the time when I know I'm going to be packing a rifle in the high country or for an extended period - my .280 makes the trip.

I'm a Viht powder fan - N-165 has done me well out of this round.
Good luck and let us know how she shoots.

Congratulations, Greg. You're in for a ton of fun. The .280 is a great cartridge, capable of punching far above its weight class.

Greg,

Congratulations on your new 280 Rem. You are going to be happy with the performance you get.

Congratulations Greg on the rifle. You will be very happy with it! Sounds like you made sure to drive the bus over me with your wife behind the wheel as the catalyst for this purchase! Glad I could help. Now sir we need to see some range reports with photo's!

Da#$* mmmmmm Mike

Nice score Greg. That will probably end up being one of those rifles you pick up for everything. Just nice and light, balances well and should be a perfectly awesome deer/elk cartridge with some AB's or PT's. Man, all this 280 talk.. No magnum designation, what is the forum coming too! Scotty

Sanity?

Well, I am sure it only so long before Fotis starts throwing wrenches into this "Sanity" you speak of! Scotty

Greg,
Like the others, I think you're going to be pleased with your choice! I've written about my venerable old 7mm-06 on here before. It's a .280 that is .050 shorter to the shoulder essentially. I spent a lot of years pre-chronograph shooting everything with 140's going about 2850 fps (if that.) Those tougher cup & core bullets like the BT are great when they don't start out at insane velocities. (Someone did mention sanity, right?). Settle on a load, sight it in and learn the trajectory, then don't worry if Big Louie steps out at 60 yards, cuz the bullet will still perform.
I just realized I don't have anything with 'Magnum' in it's name :p . Think I want a 325 wizzum.

Greg,

Very light rifle and a great caliber. You will love packing it in the mountains. I use 160 Partitions for anything in Wyoming. They work well on elk. The bullet passes through with an exit wound the size of a golf ball. Puts them down quick. Get her scoped and show her off. Brian

I always wanted to own one but the 7mm rem mag always won. The good thing is my buddy's kid saved up and got one and know I am handloading for him. It is a fun "logical" practical chambering!

Great round Greg, it deserves far more respect that it has. This one, I think Remington snafu'd from the start.
Having several over the years, it is still one my favorites.
I'm betting you will enjoy it also!!!

How did the dies work out for him? I always wondered if he was able to put some good loads together with them. Scotty

We are just going retro right? Very nice rifle, I want to get one some day. Can't justify now.

Corey

Corey, thats funny you mention retro. Part of the coolness to me with the WSM's is they remind me of the Newton cartridges of almost a 100 years ago. They were very far ahead of their time being beltless and just having a ton of steam. At least that is what I tell myself. I do like the few belted rifles I own and wouldn't part with them, I don't see myself buying anymore of them. Scotty

Yeah I'll have to look that one up have not heard of it. I think it's funny how we are all hooked on magnums yet the cartridges of yesterday did everything (at least most) and we are now rediscovering that. I'm included in that. I like my belted 7mm but my first .270 would do everything I do just fine.

Corey

Had the bullets available today been available 70 years ago, I should imagine we'd have an entirely different stable of rifle cartridges.
