I have never felt the need for either, but do have a cell phone that carry every day..it may or may not work in some places, but I'm a curmudgeon and ranch raised, and have hunted my whole life without either..A map might be handy and you can get them from the Forest Service or BLM..

I'm in the same boat as you. $$ has started to add up pretty fast, so I think I'll go with the phone version. It can be synced to my tablet for a better pic during research, or in the truck, and in the field I can just turn off the Wi-Fi and Data to save battery life, then a quick on-off as needed.
