grizzly delisting

I seem to have come across grizzlies just fine, outside of Yellowstone. I don't have a lot of personal experience, and haven't studied the matter intensely. but I do believe that there are enough grizzlies roaming the west to justify a season.

Thanks for posting this!

Local man took these pictures not far from my house yesterday.

She's a good mama watching out for her young'uns.

I did note that FoxNews carried this news item earlier today. I would think there are enough bears for a season. There certainly appear to be enough encounters reported in the news.

I read through a few pages of peoples comments last night . I'd say keep them protected was winning by about 15 to 1 . these bears will be protected forever , if they make a decision based on the comments . a few even talked about man made global warming hurting the bear population .

Since I don't live where grizzlies roam I can't make a comment but would like the option to hunt them if it was possible. We have Black Bears coming out of hibernation and they are raiding the bird feeders and making the front page of the local paper. Can't hunt them either in my area.

Really? Can't hunt black bears? Goodness...

Of course a few years ago I did have someone come unglued that my son and I had each shot black bears. The person thought they were endangered, eventually calmed down a bit when I explained there were over 30,000 of them here in Washington State... Still questioned why we hunted them, but was somewhat satisfied that they weren't going extinct in the near future...

It will be interesting to see how this battle over de-listing the grizzly goes. I know many of the residents of Montana, Wyoming and Idaho are more than ready for a season to open up - as the big bears are spreading well beyond Yellowstone, out into ranch land.

Wouldn't that be something to hunt bear in that's again. Grizzlys that is. Talk about going back in time. It would be a hunt of a lifetime.

The Black Bear was few and far between but have come back strong and we can only hunt them in the western counties where the population is suppose to be larger ( with a special license ) but my county is catching up fast since we are having more encounters.

...a number of trails in the Cody area, not Yellowstone, not the Recovery Zone, are already closed due to "bear activity", bears, mostly sows w/ cubs are being trapped on the golf course, in subdivisions as they move lower down the river systems to protect their cubs. Conflicts are increasing, along w/ depredation of moose & elk calves. There's been as many as six grizzlies in the dead animal pit that only a couple mi. from my house, I've had a sow w/ 2 cubs in my back yard. The recovery area is reaching holding capacity. Maybe instead of moving problem bears from the Hoback up to Clark, & from Clark down to the Hoback @ thousands of dollars each time, maybe controlled hunts to remove a few bears, while inputting thousands of dollars into the local economy is a better idea...

Wow, that's a novel idea... Too much sense...

Put that on the back burner! Ha.

I spent a week in the thorofare last year . in and around the petrified ridge and pass creek . grizzly bear are a dime a dozen in this area . I saw grizzly every day . they were in around the camp every night .they were right outside the tents , we could hear them sniffing . Wy G&F gave the outfitter cracker bombs ( loud shotgun shells ) to shoot over the bears to try to chase them away from camp . that worked for an hour or two then they would be back . I'm comparing this to Pa , that has a healthy black bear population . I never see these black bears the way I saw the grizzlies . my observation , that area is way over populated .

You guys are saying the same things I hear from my Wyoming & Montana buddies... Grizzly numbers are way up, their territory is spreading, and there are more problems with bears than in decades...

We get more and more reports of them close to Missoula and I sure feel that it is time to have very limited hunts on them. I feel their proposals for a season is a well thought out plan. Ever noticed that the folks who grouse the loudest and seem to know the most about a topic such as this seem to be the ones that are the furthest removed from nature and see nothing but concrete and asphalt in their day to day existence!!

But, they like to see pictures, David. And they hope one day to have a guided tour to see some grizzlies (and maybe even a wolf) in the wild. Then, they will be able to speak with authority at the next meeting on delisting.

OH boy ,did you two nail it . the other night I read through a few pages of comments on this I just shake my head . here again one of the bears had a name that I can't think of . he was killed or found dead , something happened to it anyway . it was like Cecil the lion all over again . BLM = bear lives matter . and don't forget it .

BLM,

Your acronym is more correct than perhaps you realize.

Of course we can thank President Slick Willy for getting rid of the BLM employees that knew game and range management and replacing them with tree hugging, bunny loving, granola eating ferrets.

I actually had a teacher in Jr. High that went back to school for a Master's in Range Management with the intention of getting cows off public land. This was back in the 1970's. It's amazing how some of these people play the long game.

True, dat, Vince. It seems that liberals are distance runners, whereas conservatives are sprinters (at best).

...the WYG&F gives outfitters "crackers", but tells everyone hunting that the grizz consider gunshots to be a dinner bell. Sometimes all you can do is shake yer head...

Thank you for bringing this to our attention jimbires. I posted a comment in favor of delisting and believe we have a good chance of getting it done. The note in the blog where only comments that site evidence will be considered and that the number of responses is important gives science a chance over emotion.

If the environmentalists were truly concerned about wildlife, they would support active management. As we all know, it is really about control. A few videos of an elk being eaten alive would certainly help our cause, but if even CNN reports wolf elk kills there is hope.

When our provincial Govern. Delisted the grizzly and put it on a Threatend spieces list they were only allowing 10 tags in the draw system. So in effect they done very little in the way of stopping the big bad hunters( that all pretty much waited for a good mature boar) as 10
Tags was minute. They could have cut the tags to zero until a certain recovery date or similar but nope. So now us as hunters are fighting to get a grizzly hunt back on the books in Alberta. But while its easy to list a species as threatend it's much harder to reverse that even if the numbèrs show the opposite.
The tree huggers have also invaded our ESRD fudging numbers and cherry picking data, such as not counting any bears in a National Parks ( Banff , Jasper, Waterton) , then they have the nerve to say there are no bears north of Hiway 16, thus not doing any counts north ( which is a huge area with a healthy population in the Hinton , Edson area north to Grand Cache and up to peace river.
They all so refuse to count the swan hills bears because they claim that is a sub speices of Grizz . Haha bureaucratic horse crap.. All in all not sure if we will get an Alberta Grizz hunt reinstated in my lifetime. We keep trying.
