Guide Gun 45-70 @ 200yds

When I shoot mine , my nose hurts. Kind of takes the grin away. After fine tuning my two new turrets on other rifles, I will seriously work on the 70. My wife says its cute! I will look tomorrow but I may have some extra 405's to trade.

I looked at the bullet stash, did not find any extra 405's apparently I shot mor of them than i thought.

I think you'll get it done Bill. I have lightened up on my charges as well. I don't feel like taking the punishment that rifle will dole out with ultra heavy loads. 350-405's at 16-1800 are pretty comfortable to shoot.. Plus, I can't see much stopping them..

I think we might have to try a coastal elk hunt to really test out the 45's!

I have been building points in Wa for 5 years now, maybe to or three more and I will be competative. I will look at Oregon stats, they do have some decent general hunts. But as always lots of competation. It just that way everywhere.

Man, I didn't know the Coastal Elk hunts were so hard to get. Either way, I am good with hunting the Rocky Mtn variety till that happens.. I will just use the 45-70 there!

Scotty and Bill,

I think a 45-70 loaded up with a 300 gr PT at 2200 fps would be quite the elk stopper. Even one of those 1000 lb coastal bulls doesn't stand a chance.

Bill,

I thought Rosevelt elk tags were OTC.

Oregon most units are... of course, the one where the best bulls are located are draw only (eg Saddle Mountain).

as an aside, there were a couple of years when I still hunted the coast that I seriously considered giving up hunting. You guys can keep your Roosevelt hunting. I have better things to do with my vacation time than to be soaked, fighting nasty brush, God-awful steep hills, and every idiot road-troller from the Willamette Valley.

Come to think of it, it kinda sounds like my work now, outside of the rain, and Kalifornians replacing Valley people.

Thanks Kurt.
That sounds like 45-70 kind of country.

I agree Jim. Would be a fearsome load..

My guide gun with 350 Hornady is on at 100 & 14 inches low at 200yds.

Set up with a Leupold scout scope in quick release Warne rings and XS ghost sights.

Fun to shoot and amazingly accurate. I sold my 1895 22 inch barrel, because of the accuracy of the guide gun in the ranges I would use it. Great fall black bear medicine

That sounds like a great set up. I am thinking of going with the Minox 1.5x8 on mine when I return. Figure if that scope doesn't suit the rifle, it can easily be migrated to another rifle. I like the XS sights alot on mine. Still need to order one of their front sights, but even with the stock front, it isn't too hard to shoot well.

I always thought a Leupold Delta Point would great on one of these rifles. Mount it in the rear dovetail. You could still mount a rail on the reciever for a scope with quick release rings if you wanted

Wish leupold would make a quick release mount for the Delta Point. Hint, hint.
