so how many of you have gone on guided hunts or are going to?

looking down the road hoping to find something for my dad & I to go hunt that would be a special hunt for us

the only thing I have no aspirations of going after are the mountain goats & sheep, LOVE the looks of the critters but not the steep and often loose looking mountains that those buggers like to live on.

Right now looking at the idea of
-Caribou in Canada since we could drive most of the way from NY
- African Plains game since the prices arn't that far off of going out west with a guide

Figured here I can get a bit better account of an outfit than what Google will tell me

but above and beyond...would just love to hear some of your highlights/lowlights of going on guided hunts

I have gone on quite a few guided hunts but it's not what you think I was the guide :) You are doing the right thing asking about people's experience, I can't say about other places but there are many outfitters and guides here who will break the rules, but there are also some that are honest people. If you do your homework you should find a reputable outfit. Caribou hunting is a lot of fun but Africa would be fun too, either would be great. Make sure you are in good shape, practice shooting and have the proper gear to have an enjoyable hunt and things should go well.

I have been on three guided elk hunts. Two in Arizona and one in BC. Probably my last three. In AZ we hunted the same piece of ground for five days. No elk were there on day one , nor were there any on day 5. The BC hunt was during a very "hot" September, one elk seen probably a decent bull, but a 3 second look was just not enough. I am not a really good reference.

I have been on guided hunts and fishing big game expeditions to various counties and islands. Most of my guided hunts have been in Mexico, Canada and the western US. I have hunted white wing dove in Mexico, plus javelina. I have also fished several places on both coasts of Mexico and the west coast of Costa Rico. I have moose hunted in Canada (no luck, no kill), hunted Quebec and Anticosti for deer successfully each time.

I have been on guided hunts in California, Arizona, Colorado and Wyoming (twice). These hunts were for white tail deer, antelope, elk and trophy mule deer. They were all successful except the last trophy hunt that I took to the Big Horn Mountains for 7 days in Wyoming for trophy mule deer. I passed some 4-point mule deer that were not big enough.

I have fished in Mexico, both coasts, and from California, long trip boats. Costa Rica, Grand Cayman, Bahamas (several islands), Salmon from California and Washington, pike and trout in Canada. I have caught sail fish (90 lbs), wahoo (50 lbs), dorado (69 lbs), blue (300 pounds) and black marlin (600 lbs), plus several varieties of tuna up to 200 pounds. Bottom fishing in Philippines and Mexico, etc. I have caught bluefish and striped bass in Massachusetts and brook trout in Labrador.

I have to say that my guides and trips were for the most part well organized, professional and lawful. My guides always tried to give me at least as much as I had paid for and were mostly professional and friendly in the process. If you have any questions, I will answer them to the best of my ability.

Charlie mentioned the lawful aspect of guiding. I booked a New Mexico elk hunt years ago with an outfitter from another nearby state. He had leased a tiny sliver of land and took hunters off of it onto other adjoining properties. Luckly, on opening day, I shot a bull crossing thru this tiny strip of land, but some hunters did not do as well.

Ask questions and get details from references, and have a good time.
