If I decide to have one built, what would you suggest? what type of action- mauser, rem, howa , barrel length, type of stock, barrel choices- I think I would like to do a pac nor since they are in OR. twist rates, etc etc give me your details. would it be easier to find a used 270 or 06 and have it rebarreled? Anything U would do different ?

A friends dad builds mauser sporters and has a 6.5-06ack. imp. I will see if he would do the work. I think he uses shilen or hart barrels

I don't know if you have the issue from a few months back, but in Shooting Times there was an article about a 6.5 wildcat based on the 30-06 case written by Lane Pearce. I had the pleasure of meeting him (pure accident at a gunshop here in Huntsville, AL) earlier this week, and we discussed that exact round. He built his on a Savage (I think he used an E.R. Shaw barrel) and said he is very pleased with the outcome. I'll try to catch up with him and ask again what the wildcat is, as it was something Fred Huntington came up with back in the day (which doesn't narrow it down much, as Huntington came up with a lot of wildcats).

On a side note, Lane is a super nice guy, and not at all the pompous jerk you might expect a gunwriter to be. We just started talking over a Remingotn 722 in 300Savage, and I guess he must have spent 45min or so just discussing guns, asking me what I like to shoot, and telling me about his experiences with various calibers as well. It's nice to know that going on pre-paid hunts with gun companies doesn't always turn people into spoiled brats.

The action of choice for most gun smiths is the M700 but nothing wrong with the others you have mentioned.
There are several excellent custom barrel makers around, ask your gunsmith who he recomends. What you intend on using the rifle for will determin the barrel contour, twist and length.
The 6.5-06 was Chub Eastman's (of Nosler) favorite. It should make a fine long range rifle. Let us know what you decide on.

Fred Huntington built (among others) a 6.5 on the .280 Remington cartridge case to get the maximum capacity.

I believe that may be the case upon which Pearce and his friends are building their 6.5's.

i was going to do a 6.5-06 but i decided that the 7mm rem mag i already had was a better deal
