H414 question

I was shooting Thursday with my 308 and 30-06. I was trying H414 in each gun. Sierra indicates that H414 was most accurate in 308 with 125 gr bullet, and I managed a .70" group. This is the smallest group so far in a new Remington 783 I picked up cheap for my kids.

The 165 gr loads in the 06 were OK, but not nearly as accurate as IMR 4350. Not anywhere close to what that Tikka is capable of.

I picked up the H414 as an alternative mid range powder when some of the others were hard to come by. But it hasn't wowed me in my guns and it seems like it fouled the bore more than other powders.

What are your thoughts/experience on H414? It's funny to get such different results. I wouldn't have thought to even use it in 308 until the Sierra book listed it as most accurate. We'll see if it is, as I'll probably work up a Varget and IMR 4895 load too. Might try IMR 4064 too. Those little 125s are fun to shoot.

H414/W760 are often neglected in the avalanche of powders available to the hand loader today. This is a fine powder that can rescue a load otherwise destined for being ignored. I don't find it any more dirty than other rifle powders. You may need to play with OAL to tweak your load. Generally, when ballisticians recommend a given powder as used in their accuracy load, remember than they are talking about the powder that yielded the smallest standard deviation. Everything else being equal, small standard deviations are usually indicative of the potential for target accuracy.

Well I've used it to good success in the 338-06AI and great sucess in the 7X57 and 9.3X62. However in the 30-06 I've had better luck with 4350 although under an inch with 414.

h414 works very well in several cartridges for me, but really excels in my 375 RUM

Jake, Thought I don't have a 9.3X62 the 35 Whelen Imp case is similar and was wondering what your loads are with H414. Though I haven't loaded a lot for my 35 Imp yet I'm finding that slower powders seem to excel in the Imp case giving higher velocity and tighter groups so far. Thanks to Fotis I now know what the velocity is for my loads and have stepped from the darkness into the light. (y)

55.5gn of H414 flat works in my '06 with 180ABs.

TheBear_78 - what bullet are you using in your 375RUM. I'm using 7828SSC in my 375RUM with 300ABs and IMR4350 with 260ABs.

With H414 My best accuracy is always with Magnum primers at Max case capacity. Very versatile powder but it likes higher pressure generally. CCI250, 58gr H414, 165gr Ballistic tip. is a Standard accuracy load

Thanks for the input guys, I'll keep at it. I was very happy with how it did in the 308.

This is what H-414 did with 130gn Nosler Ballistic Tips in my former 270 Win at 200 yards (off a bipod).
