Had an accident and now own a 7mm-08

I have been using IMR 4350 with 120 BT's and 140 Accubonds out of an 18 1/2 inch barreled Model 7. Accuracy is great. I am sure I could get better velocity with other powders but I have a .280 if I want more speed. With that short barrel I would think you should have an advantage in the accuracy department.

120 Bt's with varget rl 15 rl19 4350 series.

Good luck

Well i was bidding on it and never thought i would get it for the price i did. Someone was suppose to outbid me.

If you google "Hodgdon youth loads" you'll get some very good guidance. I'm starting an 11yr old with the 270WSM data from Hodgdon.

I've shot a Model 7 in 7mm-08 for 25+ years. My search for an effective low recoil load resulted in using 120 grain Nosler BT's, CCI BR2 primers, and 42.0 grains of IMR 4064. It shoots 1/2" to 3/4" accuracy and is a deer hammer. The real benefit is having recoil so nominal that I can watch the deer tip over through the scope. This load also shoots cloverleafs in my son-in-law's Tikka.

Man, I hate when I accidently come home with a new rifle. The 7-08 is really a sweet cartridge and should be the cats meow for your boy. I know RL15 and Varget work well in the 308, so those would be two I would give a whirl. Good luck, show us some pictures of that little Ruger. Scotty

My buddy has the same rifle and his shoots the 140 AccuBond pretty decent with a load of varget a grain or so below nosler max. I remember it shot right around an inch. He hated the trigger and put in a Timney. It's not the hawkeye but is compact model. If yours is the Hawkeye, you might have a better trigger than the original m77.

I am with you Scotty, I am accident waiting to happen when it comes to rifles
I can't go to the gun shop with having an accident of some sort when it comes to equipment!!

Blessings,
Dan

Just figured out it is a Frontier and not a compact. Hopefully i can remove the ugly rib. I bought it cheap enough i can live with it.

The scout version is great for fast shooting in thick stuff but it takes some getting used to and an extended eye relief scope. Not a good beginner set up for future standard models. You might take the rib off. Either way it's a nice rig in a great beginner caliber with load potential from vamint to superformance for elk. I used Varget and 139 gr Hornady btsp bullets with good accuracy.

I ended up with a 308 Win this way.

I hate it when those things happen. I need a counselor to deal with my "gunboker" problems.
